How does everyone feel about using PHP scripts to make mobile websites?

Do they provide something more than the WYSIWYG type fill in the blank platforms?

I find any type of platform is always going to be limited in what you can do. The only way to have true flexibility is to manipulate the source code directly.

Yes, the learning curve is a little steeper but it's going to open you up to way more possibilities rather than being restricted to what one platform allows you to do.

JQuery Mobile is hands down the easiest platform to learn, if you have beginner html skills you can build a very nice site. I see so many people getting ripped on this forum spending hundreds of dollars a month when you could go to jquerymobile.com build a site for free.

WillR, just to add to what you said...most platforms will have somewhat limited functionality...however...

There are several that also give you access to the source code as well.

Listen to WillR, he's the best when it comes to building mobile websites. His WSO is well worth it and explains everything in easy to follow steps. Put it this way, I can build a mobile site from scratch in 2hrs - thanks to He who must be adored!!

If I have the copy and the graphics cut before hand, I can build a decent mobile site with gomobi in 20 minutes. I'm still not happy with it.

I need access to the source code for the simplest things, they won't give it to me and it's maddening.

HypeText, if you know of a good php platform that will give me more control than that, please let me know.

I'm afraid that I am unaware of any PHP Scripts that will do what you are looking for. Doesnt mean they dont exist...just means I havent come across any...

I've already considered and disqualified them. No white label or agency programs and clients have to pay them directly. Plus, they work against you marketing free mobile sites for a year in a new partnership with Google. (It's all at howtogomo.com which is the most unintentionally funny marketing campaign I've ever seen.)

I totally agree with you. If you dig, you'll find something that will give you
access to the source code so you can tweak to your hearts content.

This is my next task to learn. Some very nice features in JQuery! Ideally, I'd like to combine custom design with JQuery.

PHP is great but you can use a mobile website builder like mobify, mofuse, mobilepress.

I agree with Will, I have built websites since 1999 using HTML, it allows you total freedom to do what you want with your website. Of course an HTML editor is helpful to ease the learning curve and show you what you have created prior to going live on the web. I suggest Coffee Cup HTML editor as it appears to be the cleanest code available right now ( No affiliation ).

It is relatively inexpensive plus it has tag features and they also have ebooks that can give you a hand up on HTML and CSS.
