MMS vs SMS - Which is better?!

by Benjam1n 30 replies
Hi all,

I have a restaurant client that wants to send out a message to his list about the re-launch of his newly refurbished bar lounge.

We talked about taking a nice picture of the lounge and sending that out along with an offer for a free bottle of wine if you book a table in the next 4/5 days.

Alternatively, we just send out the offer without the picture.

I just wondered whether anybody had done split testing between MMS conversions and SMS conversions and which one you think would get a better response.

Personall, I think the picture message is a good idea because its a bit different and people might be a little bit more intrigued. It will also show them what a nice job he's done with the lounge.

Interested to know your thoughts. (Cost doesn't matter by the way).

Why don't you do the split test yourself?

Secondly if it is a re-launch then your local newspaper will cover it for free. Well as long as you had the marketing nous to have already contacted them which I am sure you have.

Thanks jimbo13, I will. But first I wanted to see what results other people had generated. If people had seen massive results for or against, it would save me and my client time and effort.

Yes, I appreciate that there are hundreds of ways for businesses to advertise, but I am using my "nous" to concentrate on mobile marketing at this moment in time.

More often than not, a MMS is going to create additional charges for the recipient.

This is why SMS with a link for a Web Based Graphical coupon is often a safer way to go.

Obviously many plans nowadays will include MMS, most people arent on those plans.

Exactly! This pretty much sums up what I was going to say.
      Don't bother with MMS.

Do you guys keep a list of your clients' emails? You can also try sending out an e-mail with the new interior of the restaurant. Best thing about it? It's free.

On another note, if you want to spend less, why not just send them an SMS and put a link to the gallery of the new restaurant (if you have one) or a Web Based Graphical coupon just as HypeText suggested.

Send a SMS text with a link to a Mobile Landing Page. The MLP can have several pictures, along with text. You can make it look like a small website, all visible on a smart phone.

Oh, and attach the Web based coupon to it.

I agree with your words dear BlackWar but here is talking about who is better between MMS and SMS only.
MMS and SMS both are good but the SMS is better then MMS because sms is so easier process only type your views and send it is also a cheap process to share your views with others.

SMS as it can be viewed on all phones regardless if they are smart phones or not...there will come a time when MMS will be the way to go but just not yet.

Too many people still have a phone that either isn't capable of receiving an MMS or will have such a small image displayed that you won't entice them to your establishment with the photo.

Agree with Alex Marsh, amanchem, ot and others...SMS is much better (for now) and way less expensive. There are two options with SMS, short code and long code.

Short code is better but cost prohibitive for most people unless you use a "shared short code". Keywords on hared are getting harder to find.

Long codes are great to start but use a longer but real AND LOCAL phone number for messaging. Keywords on long codes are always available as each client actually gets a "real" line that can send texts and send voice messages - depending on the actual framework used.

MMS, is great for images and videos if you need to send a high impact graphic out.

Otherwise, I prefer a standard SMS text message which is short, concise and straight to the point.

Obviously MMS ,because there is a saying
"thousand word is equivalent to one picture"

MMS is for multimedia service ,so please make it well an attractive and send him with a nice greeting and offer.

    Hi,
I think SMS and MMS both are better for mobile marketing .You can sent any Massage with the use of SMS and also sent video with the use of MMS ,so here we can say both are very important for Mobile Marketing.

    Thanks

I would vote for split testing, but I wouldn't send a photo of the lounge, I'd send photo of the offer. So you'd get a graphical offer via text and the text message, as opposed to just a photo of the lounge and the text. Also in your text ask them to forward to a friend. Depending on your age demographic, a large % may have smart phones and forward texts, etc.,

You are right Benjamin, it is better to catch their attention right away if you do not have time yes. But if you want to build a long term relationships or more returning customers? There is no way possible that SMS will ever beat will ever beat good old MMS... You can also get a lot more creative via MMS.

according to my opinion mms would be a better option because picture speaks for itself and people believe what they see so an mms would have a greater impact than a simple boring sms..

Okay...so what if you have like 28 various businesses as clients you want to drive foot traffic to? How would you handle that?

Edited to add: Wouldn't it be more feasible to make or create your own website app for people to download and use from a website? I'm new to this so, please pardon my ignorance. I'm just trying to find an easy way to track ROI and customers who visit various businesses I'm promoting without using mailed coupons if they can get them on their phones. Thanx!

I think SMS would be better with a link to a website with the re-launch photos.

MMS is great..not everyone's phone can handle it yet. For old school users on boost mobile flip phones aren't going to see the quality of the picture. And it cost more for the sender & recipient.

When you want to tell about any product or share any link, sms is the best. But if you want to sell it by watching any picture, mms is the best for it.

i think mms is better because through mms, marketers can add an image or video to the message.the net result is a message that is understood and positively received by the consumer.
