Is there SEO needed for mobile sites?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I would like to know if in fact there is SEO you can do for your mobile site as my web designer said as of now there is not. Just that my places page ranking has something to do with my mobile site. I run a simple carpet cleaning company and my mobile site is just a scaled down version of my larger site. Just easier to read and navigate for a smart phone I guess.

I would love to hear if there is any separate SEO work that needs to be done for my mobile site. Please elaborate if possible.

Thanks in advance

P.S. My site is in the signature if you want to look at it on your smart phone.

Probably not, however...

I did a basic search and you're currently number 5 for "Carpet Cleaning Tampa" which is a pretty good result (though I would capitilise your Title, and add some more marketing phrases to it and your description).

As far as your mobile site is concerned, (m.familytimecleaning.com) I had a look at your meta tags and found this...

<title>Carpet Cleaning Tampa| Carpet Cleaners</title>
<meta name="keywords" content="8 to 10 good key phrases for each page">
<meta name="description" content="Looking for carpet cleaning service in Tampa FL. This is a high-end cleaning service. Call today 727-742-5677!">
...so even though what I'm about to say below makes this all moot, it probably wouldn't hurt to "marketise" your tags on both sites.

I would suggest adding an extra space in your title tag before the | (after Tampa) because on my phone it looked like a spelling mistake and read like Tampal - better yet, leave it out all together and just call it something marketing like "Best Tampa Carpet Cleaners" (or something better - I'm not the world's best copy writer or marketer).

Secondly, add some good keywords to your keywords tag.

Thirdly I would make the first line in your Description tag a question (Looking for carpet cleaning service in Tampa FL? and add "are you" to the start so it reads..."Are you looking for the best value carpet cleaning service in Tampa Florida?") - but that's just me - I like to speak to people in a normal voice in marketing and copy.

But the big thing I noticed while researching this answer is that when searching as normal, Google will produce mainly (not only - but mostly) normal sites in the results (not .mobi specifically and certainly not many m-dot (m.) which suggests to me that most SEO power is gained by having all normal good on-site SEO practices in place on your normal desktop version to begin with.

There is a way to get a result for only mobi sites by searching
Tampa carpet cleaners site:mobi

...but I can not find a way to search only for mobile versions of sites that are built on the popular "M dot" (m.domain.com) sub-domain (someone correct me here if there is) so what does all this mean? Well, it seems to suggest that there doesn't seem to (currently) be a way (or desire) to search for "mobile" sites only so given that no one is searching for (nor is Google displaying results for) your M.Dot sites there would seem to be no reason to optimise it for search engines.

My advice would be to do the normal things such as marketise your tags on every website you build "just in case it helps" but to mostly focus on your main site to pull people in from search engines and then (as you do) redirect mobile users to your mobile site.

Hope this helps - good question!

Thanks Bill, this is what I was told so I will just continue to work on the regular site. I also will fix the title tags as suggested and possibly re word as you suggested the description. Thanks again for your reply.

What makes you say that Linkmonster? I've been searching on Google and I'm just not seeing any mobile sites appearing unless I do a specific search for ".mobi" sites and I can't see anyone doing that (can you?).

Doing everything you can to make sure your main site comes up in the search engines is obviously essential but I see mobile sites as just a way do add an alternative mobile version to your main site and a way to offer the bonus of increased ease of use to mobile users.

I'm relatively new to mobile website making but from what I see none of them are appearing in the search results at all. I'm open to being proved wrong in my search fore education so please share your thinking on this. I look forward to hearing how you think doing SEO on a mobile site is beneficial.

To be perfectly honest mcatt, seo for mobile is a ranking factor for sure. Your mobile site will need to be seo optimized. If you have ever used google's free analytics program you can see that google knows what devices your traffic is coming in from. This means google can determine if the user is on a desktop or a mobile device. So if google sees user XYZ is coming in on an iphone it would prefer to A) give user XYZ a mobile site over a desktop site and B) give a mobile seo'd site over a mobile site with poor seo.

For the moment google is giving mobile users all of the same results that they would get if they where using their desktops, from what I can see. I think they are still testing. This is mainly because not everyone has their site mobilized and those that do dont have it optimized for seo.

With that said I think your safe for at least a little while.

BUt as with any new medium, if you can get in now and get ranking google will keep you there. Im sure they are already testing their algorythm for the change and possibly even using some mobile sites in mobile searches as top results even though the main desktop sites may not be top results. I cant say for sure because I dont know.

Good luck

@mcatt 100% SEO is important for mobile searches and sites.

Google is smart enough that it ranks mobile optimized higher higher for mobile searches. To ensure you get the best and highest results its important that you SEO your mobile website the same way you would SEO a normal site.

Thanks for the post. My Question is that my site is not mobile optimized what do i mean by this is that i don't have site for mobiles so when some one opens itz same like my website on desktop or laptop.
My question is that how can we bring our website on top without making a site for mobile. And is it possible or not ??

All websites need to be optimized, just make sure they are not over-optimized.

I think probably no, but definitely think it would be very useful for mobile devices.

Quick question, interested to know if you performed these searches on your laptop/pc or on a smartphone device?

Thanks, Sue

oh just because I wondered if you would get the same kind of results if you actually use the medium that the mobile website is designed for to do these searches, the smartphone, I don't actually know the answer, I am just getting into Mobile Websites/marketing in my local area (or trying to lol) and am on a research phase right now...

Thanks for the answer, Sue

That's a good question.

"Does google deliver mobile sites (or sites with mobile versions) to a search result page when the search is being donw on a mobile phone?"

I'm not sure. It'd be nice if they did because it would make selling mobile sites a lot easier.

You could take a look at the Google Guidelines: Developing mobile sites - Webmaster Tools Help

I would say that Google ranks mobile optimized sites ahead of desktop search results if they are identified as mobile. However it is also possible to get a mobile site rank well in both worlds. If you follow the Google Guidelines, use a .mobi domain you have a very good chance to good rankings in the mobile world. Don´t forget, there´s a reason why Google makes use of a special mobile crawling bot

Kind Regards

Steven

Better to get on this early than late - so yes, it is possible to do mobile SEO, and you should do it.

Although I'm guessing the number of niches that can convert from mobile traffic will be less than from normal desktop users.
