I'd like to hear your guys' opinion on whether it would be better to: A. Sell mobile website on your approach to a business owner to get your foot in the door, then later upsell on SMS marketing ideas. B. Sell SMS marketing on first approach, then throw in a mobile website in that package or as an upsell. Would love to hear your guys experiences, what worked best for you. My partner is currently going to restaurants with sample pages and scanning their personalized QR on approach and showing them mobile website. However I want to know your view on this and what you think would be the most converting way to do this, because I am very interested in SMS as well. |

I think it depends on the type of business you want to target on how easily they can see a return on the investment. For example a restaurant will more easily see the draw in sending instant communications to all their customers to drive people in vs telling them people have to scroll around on their phones and it is annoying.

I agree with Daniel. I deal mainly with restaurants, bars and clubs and they like the advertising of sms. Clubs tell who is playing, bars list specials and we all know what you can do with restaurants. But, you need to interview the client to find out what their need is. I have been surprised more than once when the questioning leads in a different direction than what I expected. And, as for myself, I do not consider either to be an upsell to the initial purchase. I consider it to be a continuation of the mobile marketing plan I set up for them. I have a negative image in mind of upselling. But a total package for their marketing is a different deal. I just start with the greatest initial need and continue on from there. Rodney |

The sales guys that we work with normally approach the clients to discuss their mobile marketing as a whole and then figure out which product to lead with based on their response to the initial presentation. Once the customer receives their initial product, the sales guys will then follow up a few months later and sell them the other product - surprisingly this works about 80% of the time, although as information about mobile web filters down to smaller businesses I have no doubts that this number will shoot up. The beauty is that if you sell the customer on an SMS package then you can go back and say "hey, if you had a mobile site then you could put a link in the SMS to send them to a mobile landing page". Likewise if you sold them on the mobile website, they become aware of the power in mobile marketing and become a hot prospect to sign up to an SMS package. |
