Long code sms texting

There is a lot of buzz about short codes for SMS text back services.
I would like to create service for real estate agents and short code cost is out of my range right now. Also considered doing shared short code but the cost gets huge too if you need whole bunch of keywords.
So I came across information about long code which would be much cheaper to operate. The only downfall of long code is that the number would be longer. At least that is my understanding. I don't anticipate more than maybe 10 messages an hour so volume should not be a problem and I could probably use FrontlineSMS to run the service.
So after all the explanation the questions are:
1. Am I correct with the above assumptions?
2. How do I go about obtaining long code? Do I just go to cell company and get plan with unlimited texting, slip the sim card into gsm modem and get it running? Would it work or do I have to go through specialized provider?
3. Any other info anyone can provide to get me going in the right direction?
Thanks.

Open an account at Twilio and create exactly what you want for RE agents with OpenVBX. Be sure to get extra plugins like the subscription plugin. Its really easy to build customized voice and sms flows. Long codes are just phone numbers, and everyone is used to dialing a phone number or texting to other phone numbers. We have done that our whole lives so its second nature.

Short codes are not that costly when you go the shared route. You can reduce cost by going with a single brand keyword and sub level keywords and buy down your SMS rate easily to .019. An account like this should only cost you about $39 per month. Private message me for a full explanation.

Xlfutur,
Wouldnt using sms modem with application loaded onto PC give me more flexibility?
It would probably give me more keyword options too.
