Hungry Jacks Mobile App Gets VERY Creative?
Share on:

I saw this when watching the local current affairs show here in Australia tonight.

Hungry Jacks Australia have just launched their new iPhone app. Once you have installed the app you then shake your phone and it will display a coupon. It will be something like a free cheeseburger, whopper, chips, drink, whatever. As soon as the prize is displayed a 20 minute countdown clock begins and you then have to make it to the closest Hungry Jacks restaurant and show them the voucher before the countdown time is up. You need to be within 1 kilometer of a Hungry Jacks restaurant for the coupon feature to work. This means most can easily make it to the restaurant within the 20 minute time limit.

From what I understand the app can be used again but once you have claimed a prize the app will lock you out for 10 hours... this is to give everyone a more fair chance of winning a prize. They are giving away a total of 200,000 prizes as part of this promotion.

Here is the video of the story. I'm not sure how long they keep up these videos so have a watch while you still can.

Burger bargain

Yeah, it's one of the first apps like this I've seen with a scarcity tactic. The 20 minute countdown clock adds that urgency to the offer and also turns it into a bit of a game I guess.

When you have a voucher that can be claimed within a week or a month people tend to forget about it.

I saw that last night as well, I had to smile. Even though ACA is THE worst "current affairs" show on earth it's good to see that in this instance they are doing us a huge favour. I'm going to use it to explain how "vouchers and special time-limited" offers can work so well for mobile phone holding clients that it was mentioned on ACA and Hungry Jacks (Burger King) is using it.

Bill,

Is ACA not just a rerun of the same old stories week after week? I can't believe it. It's actually quite comical. When one of my brothers said that the other week I said yeah that's right, but we're still here watching it each week aren't we?!

I've also noticed a lot of cross promotion for sites such as CatchofTheDay.com.au and Cudo.com.au. They seem to do a story on those sites at least once every 2-3 weeks and funnily enough, we know Cudo is owned by NineMSN. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have some kind of involvement with Catch of the Day because you just wouldn't do that many stories on the same site unless you were trying to promote it.

Correct, they are an "advertorial" program and they lie and mislead and sensationalise and patronise. For example (and this is getting off topic a bit). They promoted poor old Peter Russel Clarke (famous celebrity cook from a few decades ago) as being HOMELESS! and in the promo showed a disheveled Peter picking through rubbish. He's not homeless, his house burnt down, he has insurance and he was picking through his burnt remains. Technically I suppose is "without a current house" but he's hardly "homeless" in the normal use of the term.

Another thing I HATE about them is at the end of the show they say "Next, a story about... (something interesting)" but it's never "next" it's always just an advert for tomorrow night's show and they say it that way to get us to "hang on". Makes me want to throw my dinner at the TV sometimes.

This post might do well in the "copy writing forum" as an example of "don't lie to people, don't sensationalise and don't mislead!"

Very ingenious. I'll bet this shows up in the U.S. very soon.

That's a great idea, but 20 minutes is really pushing it! What if it's rush hour and the traffic is bad... and then they get to HJ and there are long lines... and by the time they get to the counter to place their order the 20 minutes is up? That could make for a very ticked off customer, lol!

I think scarcity is a great marketing tactic, but I think a "20 minute" limit could easily backfire in this situation. I would think a 1 hour limit would be a lot more realistic.

But yeah, other than that, I think it's a pretty creative idea overall!

The point is you are suppose to be close to a Hungry Jacks store, within a kilometer, when using the app. It won't work otherwise. I am sure they would also be fairly lenient with the time limit thing.

It may already be in the US, I'm not sure. We may actually be behind the times over here in Australia... as usual.
