My F***** God. That Bmobilized is amazing. The sites it spits out aren't that great but better than what I see some people charging hundreds for.

My advice: increase your skills so you can deliver a product that looks better.

Advice for myself: steal their idea

Do you really think business owners are scouring the net looking for free or cheap mobile website builders? Most business owners don't even know they need a mobile website. In fact most haven't even heard of a mobile website before.

If Wordpress is free then why do companies still to this day pay people like you and me thousands of dollars to put together websites for them?

You are worrying over nothing.

Your time is much better spent getting out there and selling mobile websites yourself.

My thoughts?

I think that some site makers like those named by the OP are using fiverr to recruit and pay people to make posts like this in this forum and others. They are usually easy to identify, and I don't know if the OP is doing this too. But if so, it is the first time I've seen a high-poster using English as a first language do this.

I made a mobile site for a computer store and showed it to the owner. He acted like he was interested, but lost interest. I checked and he used Dudamobile to make a site for the store. Not only doesn't it look that good, the click to call doesn't work. You get what you pay for.

You can get anything you want if you help enough other people get what they want.

I have experienced both, Will, Steve, most here have made good points. I have noticed crappy existing sites don't convert well using these systems. And there are a lot of crappy sites out there, I recommend building sites from scratch, or if you going to use a site builder, use one that fits the client. There are so many site builders on the market, with different designs and functions, create your own library of them, and use which ever one the client likes best. There is no such thing as one size fits all.

Seen em before and while I'm impressed with their growing capabilities, like Will said, I don't think it's worth worrying about as far as competition goes.

exactly! LOL

I watched Hotel Impossible ( i think that's the name), a reality show that has a consultant turn around poor hotels. He was in Branson MO at a motel built by two couples and they had terrible declining occupancy since 2001/02 they said. I'm talking 17% occupancy in some months which is atrocious. Their motel was pretty clean and ok for Branson motel standards. The consultant noticed they didn't have a freakin booking application on their ancient web page! They only had 20 visits a day with no online reservations. LMAO.

The two older couples would never think of adding booking while they scratch their heads waiting for walk-ins while their competitors are much busier!

Biz owners want results, not to become IM gurus.

Re: Competitors?! DIY mobile site makers!!
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Will and others are exactly right... offline businesses are not looking for mobile site designers, diy builders or most any type of IM services online. They don't have the time and don't care.

This is my story...

I drive 600+ unique users per day to my blog through LinkedIn, some Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc..., there's a ton of articles, Will's videos (killer btw) and I have only had 12 enquiries for a mobile site in 6 months!!! (closed 8. terrible numbers)

And I know why, and this comes from pounding the pavement in my town for a full month surveying and showing demos to businesses.

They know that Mobile has to be part of their marketing strategy to compete. The fact is, they are NOT going on the web looking for
“Mobile Website Designers” or anything to do with online marketing for that matter! They are way to busy and couldn’t give a hoot. (They go online to plan their vacations ;-))

I spoke and showed demos to no less than 100+ small business owners back in April and May and closed 27 for mobile sites, 4 for full WordPress sites and 3 for SMS campaigns.

And, in conversations with them, I asked how they get their information regarding any type of online marketing services. Almost all of them
said flyers, post cards, direct mail pieces specifically sent to them, cold calling, walk-ins and networking at the chamber etc... are big too. (B2B)

The direct mail makes total sense to me in that my brother does desktop publishing, and 12 of his clients are web design firms who indeed use direct mail. (I’m on their lists, and none of them offer mobile!)

As of June 1st, I no longer publish any more blog posts, deleted my Facebook (lonely hearts club) account, Twitter is next, and LinkedIn gets the odd enquiry, but after 360 connections, it's not that hot. And let's not forget how much time is wasted trying to keep up, for what?

The mobile market is massive! There's enough clients for thousands of us! The main thing is to use what ever tools you are comfortable with to make the sites, aquire the clients and so on. Just give them results.

Just bring it to them, and don't be cheap with yourself! There's no competition as far as I'm concerned. I live in Toronto Canada and only know of a handful of mobile companies.

Thanks for this post of encouragement. Looks like Facebook, twitter and linkedin will all miss you (good riddance anyway) but I'm sure your accountant will love seeing you next year after you've made both he and yourself a boat load of money selling mobile sites.

Best.

Hi MobiGorilla,

I was curious as to what you use to build your apps? I am just starting in this new trend and I was looking at a company to assist in the creation of my apps. As a fellow Canadian ( I live in Ottawa) I was wondering if you could shed some insight. I am unable to PM just yet, so if you could add a personal email address.. we could chat.

thanks,
Dave

I would not use any of those online mobile site generators for clients because when they go out of business which most will do you have egg on your face.

The client does not own the url or the site and in biz you should never let anyone else control your destiny.

I must admit for the reasons mentioned above I am absolutely terrified about using those types of services. Does anyone know what happens when these companies go out of business. What happens to all those apps?

They do down the toilet along with the business.

Never use third party hosted solutions unless you desperately have to. You are only setting yourself up for failure further down the line. It might save you a little time now but the headaches it is likely to cause later on is not worth it.

I don't think anyone is coming after you Mike. You asked a question, people are giving you their opinions.

I used to use Dudamobile for mockups, but they've made some changes that make it annoying to do so. I've considered using one of those kinds of services just for the sake of ease... but as everyone else pointed out, that's not the best business decision long term, for you or the client... so I won't.

There is a provider or two here on the forum who custom design wonderful mobile websites that can be hosted on the client's server, and that really is the best kind of option either WP or HTML based, IMO.

There are usually questions regarding the functional and non functional requirements if you use odesk or other websites which proposals are not very clear which is included and which is additional fee. I’m specialized for more than 10 years through projects in Germany and Europe for requirements, quality management, including testing and successful handover to the customer.
I have several certificates in CMMI, SPICE, PMI, ISTQB and Agile methods (SCRUM Master, Product Manager)
This provides the customer only one contact person to clarify everything, so he does not get every day questions about Fields, requirements, process, workflows do’s and don’ts.

Depending on the app and/or website requirements, I work with several agencies, but I’m responsible for the whole coordination. So you don’t have daily skype conferences with all the stress and sometimes you need to push the people to deliver in time and in budget, which should not be underestimated.

If you are interested to realize your project/idea in budget, quality and time then you can contact me.

I have tried all the so called "free" and online mobile website creators - and some actually do a good job. But that is really where it stops.

My friends, there are tons of business owners that need mobile and IM services, but in agreeing with WillR, not many are actually on the internet looking for cheap or free solutions.

Creating and self-hosting mobile websites for clients is the best way to go. The same is true for third party Facebook apps that host your Facebook app, etc.

A good marketer stays in control of all aspects of a client's account, from completing of the project to support.

Hosting is not expensive at all as well as securing your own SSl certificate.

...stay in control.

In my experience, business owners spend so much time running their businesses that they rarely have the time to go and look for services they probably don't even know exists, let alone understand how it benefits their bottom line (or not).

It's our job the educate and help them realise the potential of a mobile presence.

Just my Tuppence worth.
