Well this answer is a bit obvious, but Youtube seems to work well for me. But if there's better players to use out there then I am interested as well.

I'm one of those weird ducks who likes to host his own. Having never built a mobile site I just didn't know if the video format was different than a regular html site or if I need a different type of player for mobile. | |

The main problem with video is file size and also end users data connection speeds which will cause buffering when a mobile visitor is trying to progressively download the video and their connection speed is too slow to handle the video. Whilst quality maybe of a lower standard don't rule out 3GP. Think about this a mobile visitor probably wont be too happy when they find that watching a high definition on your site has taken a size-able chunk of their data plan! lol Also Google states that mobile visitors typically do not wait more than around 3.5second wait time to access mobile content. All of this can be avoided by proper implementation of 3GP... If you a really stuck on providing the best quality video to your users for a better mobile end user experience give mobile users a choice which to view! I have spent hours testing various video formats on mobile devices and found that 3GP was the ONLY video format that worked across the broadest range of mobile devices as well as was the ONLY video format that progressively downloaded on older Android devices as well iPhones, blackberries, etc. - it also has the smallest footprint in regards to filesize compared to other video formats. If you read up on 3GP it was originally designed specifically designed for mobile and whilst many people don't realize it YouTube also delivers 3GP to non smartphone devices when available. Now bare in mind there is a difference between accessing video and embedding video on a mobile website. Different mobile browsers handle video differently so be sure to check on a real handset what your code does - as whilst you think it may look fine in a emulator chances are it wont be embedded but instead just generates a link and opens up the movie in the devices media player. To link to a 3GP video simply link to the video as you would a regular <a href> link - typically i would link a screenshot image to the video. I also tested several media convertors and encoders and found that ONLY Apples Quick Time Pro consistantly provided the most reliable conversions. ie Many convertors i found the video would perhaps work on the iPhone but have no sound on Android, or no video but sound on a Blackberry..... 99% of the time I found media exported with QTP worked period regardless of format exported ie MPEG4, 3GPP, etc For approximately $30 to me it was money well spent - http://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/ FYI it will also export embed code for you as well for more info see here: http://images.apple.com/quicktime/pd...User_Guide.pdf HTH Jay |
