How do you promote an Android app?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi there -
I am the new "owner " of an app, which I paid plenty of money for, supposed to be a "done-for-you EasyApp" - which has not turned out well. The promised result was installs in the thousands...so far, nada.

Eight months into this, and absolutely not one dime of commission has shown up in my mobile network account. I asked for a refund (after dozens and dozens of support emails asking what is going on, also NO phone support and no one would talk to me) -- presumably I will get a partial refund - but was told that the app now belongs to me - and I can go ahead an promote it.

Since it was supposedly promoted for months and there is not one dollar to show for it, and now it is mine, would someone suggest how I go about getting installs for this? It is a local groupon type of thing. I look at the page and it tells me nothing. Obviously you don't send web traffic to this, it would have to be advertised on the Android through a CPA network or mobile marketing venue?

I would really appreciate it if someone who knows what to do about this would PM me or post some suggestions.

Thanks so much
Linda

ps All I can say is, if it says it is EASY it probably sucks. Done-for-you sounds good but doesn't always work out. Learned my lesson, I won't ever do this again.

Does it work for every city or just certain cities? A better description on Google Play might help some. You can also upload it to the Amazon Market, free for the first year.

Here are a few option you you could use to promote it.
  • Get review sites to publish it, some are paid & some are free
  • CPA Deal (Offermobi, etc)
  • In app banner ads that are CPC (cost per click)
  • Ad networks that are CPI (cost per install)
  • Direct deal with an app owner for CPC, CPI or impressions
  • Local ads for the deals it shows
  • Build a deal aggregator website for the cities & promote it there ?

What company promised this but didn't deliver?

Hey Linda,

From my experience, "done-for-you" app makers are mostly used for local businesses as another option for their existing customers. They usually aren't that great for actually making an app that sells well and makes money, as you are experiencing now.

However, one option that you might want to consider is partnering with a "couponing" blogger. Since you have an app that needs users and the couponing blogger has readers (make sure you only contact established bloggers) who he or she wants to provide value to, you may be able to try a JV deal with them.

Maybe you could work with a blogger to rebrand the app - instead of "Local Saver" it would be "CouponSite.com's Local Saver" and split the profits with the blogger if he or she agrees to promote it on their blog.

Hope that helps!

Many thanks for the suggestions...I can't name the company because if I do the WF moderator will eradicate this thread, and I am more interested in knowing how to market the app at this time.

These all sound like great ideas - I will have to look further into this, I really don't know anything about apps. It is local to my city, which is not the most ideal population-wise(ie, not LA or NYC) but maybe not as competitive -- and don't have a clue about coupon sites, but hoping my investment is salvageable.

Most likely I will need to outsource this after I do some research. I'm emailing the bestrating 4 me service to find out more about that. Anyone who is skilled and savvy about this can PM me - Much appreciated,
~Linda

Hey Connect,

There are pay per install companies. Never used them because I do not have my own app. Do a search on mobile ppc/ad networks for pay per install (apps). Tapjoy and Applifier should both have those programs. Good Luck!

I have used Tapjoy, installs are $1 on their minimum bids.

Conect, PM me I might be able to help you out and give you some more options as well but I need to know some other specs on the app first. I serve about 60k ad impressions a day so I might be able to help you there as well.

Did you try marketing thrugh social networking. Facebook's target adds are promising. Also, as already suggested, you can ask the bloggers to write the reviews.

OR

You can search some app of same niche. You can then ask him to buy your app on 50:50 profit sharing basis and show your app under his name. e.g. imagine if the developers of Angry Birds start showing your app as one of their products.

Just a suggestion...

Contact your local television station and tell them you built an app to save people money. Local television stations are ALWAYS looking for local stories (I used to work for a TV station and newspaper and we were always looking for local interest stories because the community loved them). Tell your local television station that you would like to work with them and see if you can work out a promotion where your services get featured on their website - especially if your app saves people money; it'll be beneficial to you and to the station. If you find success with this then move to other markets and repeat the process.

How do you start? A simple post on the wall of the Station's facebook could jump start this (stressing that you are local) and build from there.

Good luck.

If it's local contact your local newspaper and tell them you have an app that will help save locals money whilst at same time supporting their local business. They'll usually do a free editorial for you. Mention that anyone who installs the app within the next 7 days go in a draw to WIN .....? (you know what I mean). You have to give people a reason to install your app.

to get in your local market, use local modes for advertisement like Local TV station and Local news paper. this may lead you to good results.

Actually it depends on the strategies adoption that how do we perform this.Usually people focus on customer and technical support, check the competition on the market and perform media techniques like video creation and social media networking but i mention again that it depends on you that how do you do this.

No no, what connectpro has paid for is already sunk cost.
I agree with going local. Give them local news agents a call. If they ask for a fee, turn them down; you have other options.
more importantly, talk with your friends and ask them what they think. Don't be shy. Your app could be less buggy than Internet Explorer, who knows, so be confident

There's also Clickbank where you can probably let other advertise your site and give them a few commission. But Thomas's idea is one of the best idea I would recommend for you to earn from that application. Work it out with a blogger. And of course you can even haggle the prices with that blogger on how much you'll give to him.
