What is the best way to make money with mobile marketing, making apps or designing mobile websites?

I keep hearing about the money that is being made in mobile marketing. I have two questions.
1) Is it more money in making apps or designing mobile websites?
2) How many different ways can you make money in mobile marketing?

    Hi there

    1) Is it more money in making apps or designing mobile websites?

My opinion, quick money is definitely in designing mobile websites because its very similar to how a potential normal web business would run, but its aimed at the many mobile devices and specific niches (ie: restaurants).

I see mobile websites being specifically being more about local search; even Google's own Mobile Movement video talks about this.

    Making apps
    --------------
Is there money in making apps? Yes, but its a HARD slog. The real money is making apps for other people, not yourself. This is like 20K-100k+ money. You either need to be damn good in programming or have a good network of freelancers/contracters.

The stuff that is promoted via App Empire is out of date and the app store marketplace is no longer as represented in that product.

Also, the question about technology keeps coming up -- it really comes down to whether you care more about making silly entertainment apps, rip-offs (a la App Empire) or whether you care more for making interesting apps, games, etc.

    2) How many different ways can you make money in mobile marketing?

Okay, I'll give this a shot.

    1. Sell mobile websites to a specific focused niche, resturants
    2. Advertising/i-ads within your app/marketing
    3. In-app purchases, news-stand and in-app subscriptions
    4. Apps with affiliate links (Amazon, Clickbank)

For further research, I would look at Springwise.com and mobilemarketingmagazine.com

    Thanks

Promote mobile offers with mobile traffic. You don't need a mobile website or a mobile app to make money with mobile. Tons of money to be made though with the right niche.

I agree with cash ads. If we can focus all our energy on a profitable niche we will see good results.

Zardon covered it pretty well. Apps you can charge a lot more, but they are also a lot more challenging to develop. Mobile websites are much easier to develop, but competition is high compared to app development, and cost a lot less. It really depends on your skills, the better developer you are, the more likely you will be making apps for other people. An app in-house is very very hard to make a living from, so your better off developing for others.

Neither. The fastest and easiest way to make money through mobile marketing is running mobile ad campaigns to affiliate offers and capturing the phone numbers / email addresses for further marketing.

If you get a campaign right, you are paid to capture contact details and then the real gravy comes from text and email marketing to your list. Lead generation arbitrage.

Thanks everybody for your input. Zardon talk about something that struck me. He said make websites focused on a niche and I remember seeing a website (I think it's makingmobi.com) but he makes just mobile websites for dentist. Cashads said market to just mobile traffic.

      1) I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question but I am somewhat new, what would be niche in mobile marketing right now?

      2) can you develop mobile app yourself? I thought there were websites where you can develop your own app?

once again thanks every one. thanks Zardon for the 4 different ways to make money with mobile.

One of the best ways to make money in mobile right now is to convert existing small business in-store terminals to accept Google Wallet. Every business will be converted eventually, all through First Data. It's an easy foot in the door and you can upsell businesses like crazy.

Check it out. Think outside the box and your head will start to spin once you realize the potential.

I did my round of making app webinars because I want to be able to bring "the latest" to my clients but they all talked about cross promoting and making money on the ads. Businesses need to have a mobile site and an app but you don't have to knock on doors to make money on the ads.

    1) A niche is something you focus on, mobile marketing is the tool. You want to sell 20 restaurants a mobile ready website, perhaps focusing Local search. You will need to have the marketing materials (there is a WSO for that) and the courage to either cold call them or connect with them in other ways.

    2) Can you develop mobile app yourself. Yes. Two ways, do it in HTML5 or use native code like Objective C, Java or whatever. There are websites where you can make your own app, there's loads of stuff like that -- I personally don't bother with them.

I would perfect small first, do something simple. Don't get overwhelmed or distracted and see if you can sell 20 restaurants a mobile ready website using good marketing materials.

If you screw up, see what you can learn from the process and try again.

I would definitely like to learn more about cash ads and the mobile affiliate offers.
i'm surprised no one is talking about SMS/TEXT marketing. In my opinion, its the easiest form of marketing to implement. THink about it:

    1) how often do you look at your cell phone?
    2) how many text do you read when you get text?
    3) Do you text?

YES to all three. sms/text marketing is by far the most effective form of marketing that is 'real time' meaning you cna think of a campaign in the morning and have people walking in you our door within the hour

    INDUSTRIES THAT USE MOBILE WELL:
    -restaurants
-any niche that does appointments: doctors, salons, etc

My claim to fame has been restaurants.I started a groupon like text business where i send out daily text deals in my city to a large super list for restaurants. In addition I have individual restaurants that i manage v.i.p mobile rewards clubs for.
