My $400 "Mobile" Haircut
Share on:

Went to get a haircut last week to a local hair salon (no barbers near me at the moment) and sold a mobile website that they love. Here's how it went down.

I sat.

They: "How would you like it?"

Me: "Number 2 buzz vut all the way around, trimmed neck with a 5 cent radius on the corners"

They: [laugh] "Well, that'll be easy."

Me: "Yep"

They: "So, what do you do?"

Me: "I build mobile websites for small business."

They: "Cool! Can you build us one?"

Me: "Yep."

They loved it! I'm happy, they're happy...everyone's happy.

The only problem was I should have got a number 3 so I can go to the next salon and see if I can do it again. I suppose I could always go a number 1.

Thanks to WillR's amazing mobile website business. Making mobile websites is not only fun, it's simple, quick and offers great value to small business. I've been a member here for many years and see many things and bought many WSOs but this whole mobile website making business is a thing of beauty.

I tend to cut my own hair using clippers ( there is not much hair left ).
Perhaps I could ask for a polish ?

Hey, even if you only have 3 hairs left they still need cutting. But, good idea, maybe you can get strike up a conversation at the auto detailers. "Headshine thanks".

Way to go Bill!

Reminds me of the story from Joe Girard, the Worlds Greatest Salesman, who used to visit a new barber each time he needed a haircut to sign them up as "birddogs" to send new business to him. He used to leave a stack of cards with them and a sign on the counter saying "ask me about the best car deal in town" (or something to that effect) and you could do the same thing too - as there must surely be some other business owners getting their haircuts there.

Nicely done!

Steve

Actually, that's a good idea!

In fact it might be a good way for people who think they're not good at cold calling to get their feet wet. Make up some flyers or business cards and just go around asking businesses if it's ok to place a few flyers or cards on the counter for your new business helping small business with "small fast mobile websites" or "website restoration services" or "website update services" for (of course) "small business". They could even offer a "spotters fee".

The undertone would of course be that they would hope that the business they walked in to might even ask for their own website to be made but without the pressure of making a "cold call". Might be a good idea to always have a business card or box of flyers in the car.

I must say I was a bit surprised myself. But I guess it proves what Will and Quentin and the others say - people need mobile sites. It only stands to reason that occasionally you will come across a business owner who knows it too and is just waiting for you to walk in through the door.

Has anyone on here done mobile ads? I have got quite a few leads via mobile ads but I cant get awebber to accept them. Do you know a better place to use for email management than awebber?

Mr Bill, greetings and congratulations !

A coupla noobie questions if you don't mind.

Did you create a mobile optimized version of the hair salon's existing desktop website ?
If they did not already have a "static" desktop site, did you make one for them (mini site, one pager or whatever)
and then install the mobile redirect onto the desktop site that you made ?
Or are you hosting their site as a subdomain /subdirectory on your servers ?

I plan on pitching mobile websites to local barbers, among other businesses, but I want to be clear in my own mind as to whether "stand alone" mobile sites are create-able, and how it's done. LOL

PS - My local biz-trepreneur guys have absolutely no interest in desktop sites, SEO etc.
They expect their customers (all local BTW) will look google their biz by name. As a matter of fact, they believe they will enjoy less competition (LOCALLY), plus quick, convenient map directions, and tap to call features, without a desktop version.

Thanks, and cheers.

Hi Max,

Actually they have no website so I took a few shots on my iPhone and made a site using their own existing colour scheme.

Here's the site I made for them. We're discussing a full matching site and QR code campaign so they can scan as they are getting their hair done and that will give them a special price on that cut plus other special offers.

We've discussed a few domain names and they are showing all their friends and getting really good feedback.

As far as building stand alone mobile sites only I wouldn't recommend that because eventually someone is going to visit on their personal computer and it will look crappy. They need a matching full site to complete the pic. They might have single splash pages that could look ok though.
