Anyone know if this is doable? I have a client who requested a tap to text button, but I've not done that before.... how do you code for that?

Here is a page that has some good information http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8...mobile-browser Looks like android you could do: <a href="sms:+11235551212">SMS</a> Not sure about iPhone though. Most QR code generators have an SMS function though, so that's an option as well. |

Thanks for the tip Dennis I agree, a couple of lines of wisdom in these threads is usually much better than WSOs ! Saves time and money. |

The tap to text feature will work on SOME phones. It does not work on all phones and that's why I still do not recommend using it just yet. When you are designing for mobile you need to remember you are designing for a whole load of different mobile phones -- not just the Android and iPhone. Good mobile design is about only using those features that will work on the large majority of devices.

From what I could find, it looks like iPhone & Android together have about 91% of market share, so I don't necessarily agree with the above statement. It would be nice if every feature worked on every phone, but the reality is they don't, so if you can achieve that for 91% of phones being used today, that's not a bad percentage.

I agree with rlhurst 91% of 5 billion plus smart phones is better than no percent of waiting for the right time |

You can agree with whatever you want. The simple fact is I don't want my clients coming along to me and complaining when a feature on their website does not work for someone. There's no need. Also, phone calls are a LOT more efficient than text messages so I would not want my clients to encourage the use of text messages from their customers.

I use the Tap-to-Call button to dial in a new subscriber to a text list. This way someone who wants to Tap into my coupons list can do so without dialing the number. Same with QR codes. |

When you are developing mobile sites you don't have to settle for the lowest common functionality if you degrade the functionality gracefully for phones that don't support it. What this means is that you can use something like sms:??? if you can check what happens on phones that don't support it, detect them and provide a different option, like tel:??? or a contact form, or nothing. This does take some technical skill, however if you are willing to learn or get a good programmer, you can take advantage of the latest technology available if you want to. |

Or if you dont know how to do that just put a text saying "this future doesn't work on every phone, in that case use the call me now button or if for lsitbuilding use the mail us now function. And don't forget to mention to your client also, so he nows upfront the technique is not supported by all phones. But as someone mentioned to rule it out completely while your customer wants it isn't an option either. | |

@ WillR my platform has a text alert app function and as a mobile marketing provider I am comfortable in the knowledge that my platform serves and delivers to Iphones, Androids, Blackberry, windows and many other ios phones. This code <a href="sms:countrycodeandnumberhere">SMS</a> works and will serve all of the above brands and more. Besides text messages have a higher open rate then email and in the best interest of my customers I believe my role is to help them generate more leads, follow up and follow through with those leads. Text message campaigns, coupons and reminders work for the customers that want the service. |

FYI - whilst the use of SMS: will work on a large number of devices - the ability to pre-populate the body of the SMS is not readily available in the same fashion as it is for email particular in the instance of iOS devices. Additionally publishing your receiving telephone number opens you up to spam crawlers... Personally we use a custom approach that integrates seamlessly with Twilio/Openvbx - unfortunately that solution is not available for a global audience due to Twilio's service area - but for local business in our area it works great. Hope that helps someone Cheers, Jay |

I use sms:email this way I get the text number in an email format. Those texts go to an email address that I set up as a coupon code opt in. Then I can email/SMS the entire list all from a custom email address. In essence free texting. I am careful to allow opting out as an option.
