Client Hosting vs My Hosting

I am planning on aggressively pursuing the mobile marketing niche beginning next week.

I would like to host my clients' mobile websites as it helps maintain control and I am also a huge fan of monthly recurring income.

There seems to be a delicate negotiation where the client may want the mobile site on their server and I would like to host it myself.

Can anyone share how they handle these discussions? Also, if I host under a separate domain will Google penalize the client?

Thanks for all your great advice!

I also try to host my clients mobile sites whenever possible, I often tell them that if their mobile site is on a different server it will work even if their main site is down, which seems to work (I don't mention that the redirection won't be working as their main site is down )

Why would you want to host under a different domain?
Just create mobile.domain.com on their server and edit the DNS to point the subdomain to your server IP, then create a new account on your server that is mobile.domain.com and it will work just fine.

The easiest way to convince them of YOU hosting the mobile site is if you get them a custom .mobi domain name for their mobile site.

You are correct. You will find it very hard to convince someone that you should host the site when they see it can just be installed on the same domain.

It should not be hard at all if you make it a value-added service.
Hosted with "them": Site goes down - Youre screwed until they answer a ticket!
Hosted with us: We are on it ASAP!

You personally support and maintain their sites, which can be a big bonus. Just make sure you do not skimp on a server.

One thing i explain to a client is that my host is already well recognised, secure and fast, so when a client is not sure wether to host on their or my host, i assure them that they will get a better and faster ranking in google hosted under one of my IP.
    This normally does it.

      Very helpful info...thanks!

If you are hosting, do you generally buy a unique .mobi domain for each client or do you have a generic domain with client subdomains or folders?

Well, I sell domains also. So I sell them a .mobi, host the site, and build it. No one else involved from start to finish. Like some above, the recurring income is the key. You do not have to go looking for more customers all the time.

Worth pointing out though that no matter where the site is hosted, even if it's on a separate .mobi domain, you do still need access to their main website for adding the mobile redirect code.

I prefer to host the website on their server. And if I want a recurring income, I will add another package monthly update with some amount of money.
