Free Stock Image Site I Use For My Mobile Sites

I recently found this site stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site (not an affiliate link) for stock images. The best part about it is that it's free!

I will admit. From time to time I used to google images and just use them. But when working with clients the last thing you want to happen is getting them in a copyright battle!

Anyway, hope a few of you can use it!

Be really careful taking them from Google. I know of several people who have done so in the past and ended up in hot water. Some of the agencies like getty images do not take kindly to that type of thing and have a legal team whose job is to just go around looking for violations. They must make a fortune from it and thus why they've made it an actual part of their business now.

Wow that is scary. It's basically stealing so I can see why these companies take it so seriously. And like you said, they make a fortune off of going after people.

The resource I listed is pretty good. If you search around on that site you can usually find some good images.

You also shouldn't be afraid to use and support sites that have paid images. Remember these people who provide photos are just trying to make a living like the rest of us. How would we be if every business owner just said, bugger it, I can go and make my website using a free tool online rather than pay someone for a quality service.

My preferred photo site is:

They are dirt cheap and you will almost always find something you are looking for.

I've used them in the past. They have free & paid images.

**** Funny thing. I was looking at a website that one a local web designer (my competition) had built here in town for a restaurant and they used an iStock photo with the watermark on it!!! OMG!

Haha that's pretty bad. Use them as an example of what you WON'T do to other restaurants in your area!

@WillR - thanks for the site. I don't mind paying for images if they are good. I used to use Dreamstime but they kept increasing their prices. I would pass the cost onto the customer but I think a few bucks an image is a good price so will check it out.

Just be weary of the less known sites. Just because a website says they own copyright to images doesn't mean they actually do. You can end up in a lot of hot water if you were to start using images that were not allowed.

So always make sure you do a thorough check before trusting the images on any websites you are not familiar with.
