I posted this in the general forum but I din't get much response. I thought I'd post it here because it involves mobile and apps. Now I know Windows mobile is very weak compared to Android, iOS, etc.. However, the new MS App store (a.k.a. Marketplace) will be for desktops, laptops, tablets and Windows phones. Write one app and it will run on all. Windows 7 has 630 million users and MS is pushing to get a lot of users to upgrade. I think this can have huge potential. The question is: what type of apps would be best for the cross-platform Windows arena? Instead of thinking mobile first, I think of desktop/laptop first, which is obviously where MS is still competitive. Would games be as attractive? Utility apps? What do you think? |

Microsoft? Is that thing still around? I would much rather write apps for the Android and Apple platforms. Microsoft just seem so yesterday. |

I think it is ideal that one app will work on all systems. Being able to work seamlessly between your laptop and mobile device may make Windows phones a little more attractive. Even if it doesn't, providing an app that does something between Windows and Android/Apple seems to still have potential. I just have to figure out what app that might be. Just my 2 cents. John

I agree, I suspect windows 8 would be another disappointment for users. About Surface, they think providing a keyboard interface is an innovator, while other platforms are trying to improve interactions which are more suitable for mobile platforms. |

As long as Windows 8 released, Windows phone Apollo 8 is coming out soon properly in October or Christmas’ day. But the real release date is not told by Microsoft yet. I believe all of us will keep our eyes on the accurate date to come.

Hey john If computer or laptops are considered then microsoft provides almost all utilities in their OS itself. Game is a nice option there. Since MS marketplace is having comparatively very less number of applications, a nice gaming applications will do the work for you. |

Windows 8 metro applications will work on Desktop PC, Laptops, windows phone and tablets. For those who don't know that yet...Like it or not Windows 8 will be shipped with all new computers from October 26th 2012. The difference between the Ipad or Android copies is if you want a computer and is not a mac that will be Windows 8. So as a developer the market is not even comparable to Ipad market. Just remember that the Metro application will work on all Windows 8 Os. VERY IMPORTANT to remember the surface is a real computer not just a kid gadget... :-) A good Games will always sale good. |

Here are a few nuggets of info if you're planning to get in just like we are here at Game Scorpion: 1. To develop Windows 8 Apps, you MUST USE a Windows 8 PC with the latest SDK and latest Microsoft Visual Studio. 2. WINDOWS 8 DESKTOP APPS and WINDOWS 8 MOBILE APPS are NOT, I REPEAT...NOTTTTT compatible with each other. This means you need to develop for Windows 8 Phone Separately from Windows 8 PC. Hence in theory 2 versions of the Windows 8 Store (This info is direct from the Microsoft Reps doing our training) 3. A piss off note: Windows 8 apps are NOT backwards compatible. This means that UNLIKE coding for Android or iOS where you can put an option in for backwards compatibility based on device, you CANNOT do this with Windows 8 phones, and hence ALL PREVIOUS windows 7 phone (Mango and earlier) are obsolete for Windows 8 apps. HOW TO WORK AROUND THIS: They basically told me to code for Windows 7 Phone or Mango and it will be FORWARDS COMPATIBLE, meaning that it will work on all phones that way. So long story short, keep developing using windows 7/7.5 phone stuff and your apps will work. When I asked the rep what the point is then to code windows 8 apps if it's not compatible with old handsets (Pretty much they told me all the handsets in the past will be obsolete) the rep told me that the reason we would code for windows 8 is to take advantage of the new Phone functionality. One major one is that (From what he told me) ALL Windows 8 Phone/Tablet devices will have NFC built in. This is a huge thing for wallet transactions in the future. Things such as going to a restaurant and tapping a device to pay, or going with a friend, both of you tapping your phones and then tapping a third device to pay and your bills are split equally for example. Really neat stuff, but kinda hurts the crowd of early adopters of the first Windows 7 phones. Anyways that's the info I have thus far. I'll be sticking to windows 7 phone development to stay compatible for now. A REALLY COOL MONETIZATION TIP however was the fact that there is a Microsoft Ad based monetization site that you can add to your apps for phone and make money. (Monetize your Windows Phone 7 Apps) So there you have it, just a taste of Microsoft from my last training session. God Bless! Abhinav
