It depends on what the website is and how much content it has. If it's a big blog then I would probably recommend you use a responsive theme. If it's a smaller website with content that does not get updated too regularly then I would suggest a standalone mobile weskit. For that you can use one of the many mobile website templates available.

Since you wish to make a mobile website using WordPress I will suggest you to use "WP Mobile Detector" plugin. It will automatically detect mobile devices and displays a compatible WordPress mobile theme on end-users device.

make sure that which ever plugin you choose - it also knows not to redirect the user back to the mobile site if the visitor actually wants to view the desktop site on their mobile phone and cause them to get stuck in a loop This is a major problem for many of the mobile redirection scripts out there,,, not all scripts are built the same! if your wordpress site is leaning more to being a blog as opposed to say a business brick and mortar website than as someone has already mentioned you may actually be better off using something similar to WPTouch - which basically mobilizes the blog portion of wordpress out of the box. Fyi - i have purposely removed my signature to my own mobile redirect wso in this post so as to not be accused again of self promoting - as with all my posts am here to help nothing more! |

Thinking about this question, I definitely would have to recommend WP Touch. As far as ease of use and value, this would be an effective and easy solution. Hope that helps! Sincerely, Roman |

You can look for a responsive WP theme if that is the way you want to go therefore a redirect is not needed. However if you want a solid standalone site I suggest you evaluate one of the many Mobile CMS systems out there as there are many turn key solutions which may meet your needs better then a WP site. |

wp is also strong for SEO, and a wp based site will pick up much faster on search engines

This addresses many things: 1) Google is looking to serve content on the same url - both responsive design and adaptive designs do this. 2) Google is looking for speed - an adaptive design optimized for mobile will ALWAYS be faster than a responsive design as it is much more lightweight. 3) Unlike responsive an adaptive mobile optimized design can be made to work on the broadest range of mobile devices - even non smartphones.and is also recommended by Google. 4) it gives you the flexibility to display both mobile specific optimized content or the same content delivered to desktop users but specifically formatted for desktop. With all that in mind an adaptive design makes for a very flexible, and robust approach to mobile - the downside is the time and know how it takes to create! LOL However once you have your own framework you won't look back
