Creating app for Android/iOS?

I want to make a application to surf my site/keep people updated about new products in my site. The release of iphone 5 has given some heat in the apple store and android play store. So, I was wondering should I go for Android OS app development or iOS app development so that I will cover more customers? What are your suggestion on this?

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Personally I have android and I think more people have android (many brands and models, cheaper also) than iphone. But may depends on your site's audience,, if it's a site about iphone, then.. :-)
Also might be best to invest into a mobile version of your site, and then make 2 tutorials on how to create a shortcut on their mobile's desktop. Assuming most visitors have a 3G unlimited plan, but might not be the case yet.

Hey WarriorFormula
The platform of the app depends upon the services offered by you. If you are providing information that should be regulated among lot of people I will suggest you to make an android app and if you are selling something I will suggest you to target iPhone users, as in latest surveys it is found that people using iPhone and iPad are making much more purchase compared to other mobile platform.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Consider one of the platforms that will allow you to publish to both ios and Android. Without much detail on the app you are trying to develop it is difficult to offer a solution.

Many solutions can be done with something like BiznessApps or Seattle Clouds. Write once, deploy on multiple platforms. Check out the WSO section as there are a number of products available where people are offering reasonable development options as part of their white labeling of BA or SC.

WarriorFormula,

This is a borderline religious issue....... "Native" vs. "non-native".... I recently read where a couple big companies totally scrapped their "native" apps...... All the code for different devices became a real pain...

They went to PhoneGap. You should check it out!

Developing with PhoneGap gives you the freedom to create mobile applications for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Palm WebOS, Bada and Symbian using the web code you know and love: HTML, CSS and Javascript.
God Bless,

Rich

I think you should go iOS to purchase more, now it's the most effective way.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Personally, I say both.. Development costs can be higher, but are you in the business of developing content, or speculating on which mobile platform will be more popular a couple of years from now? I think there's enough of an audience on both, and it's fairly neck-to-neck (At least recently..) that I wouldn't want to leave out one or the other, to be honest.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Before an app goes live, they have to be approved by Apple and Google Play - the two app stores. It's getting more difficult to have "apps for commercial use" approved by Apple. Google Play (Android) is far less difficult to get an approval and the approval turn-around time is much faster. I would "start" with an Android app simply because it'll be available and out in the market much faster than an iphone app. If you decide to move forward with an Apple app, I'd download a copy of their App Development requirements; study it; and design an app that is meeting those guidelines.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

I would advise you start with android because it is easier to get apps approved in google play.

It is easier to get our app approved in google play plus you can also market your android apps through amazon app store, so i would advise you start off with android.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

What is your purpose? Is it to acquire a larger audience to your site?
Do you have a mobile optimized site already?
I would just do an HTML5 app using a free APP service out there and then decide if you really wanna pursue an iOS or Android app if you have a need for it - analyze your traffic and see if most of the mobile traffic to your site is iOS or Android...
my 2cents..

I believe that the number of people using an Android OS phone is more than iOS phone. So I think that using an Android OS app development will be better than going for the other option. This will help you reach out to more customers online. However, I would like to get some views on my suggestions from others as well.

Whether it's on an iOS or Android operating system system, cellular customers now take more time using applications than they do on the Web. Quantity Statistics found that cellular customers invest a typical of 94 moments of the day to applications, while they give just 72 moments to the Web.

I think for the type of app you are wanting you should not have a problem using a program that produces an app for all devices at once. As other people have mentioned, getting into Google play is close to instant however the Apple store is a much different story.

iOS is the Best compare to android. Though many having android phone, iOS is the best in terms of app. So what my suggestion is you can go with the iOS apps.

Built on both android and apple platform, although i think android users are increasing. Approval on google play store is definitely faster.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

I also recommend to use as many platforms for your application. Usually it takes 1 week to get approval at Itunes and couple hours only in Google Play.
And actually I don't agree that you need to have a good programmer. You can actually build your apps without those technical skills. For example, this service is good for using - AppsMoment: Builder Application | Develop Iphone App | Ipad Publishing | App Maker android

I would go for iOS first. I may be a bit biased, though. iOS users have been proven to have a greater desire to spend money.

If you are definitely planning on developing for both platforms, I would look into a cross-platform tool like Appcelerator.

Hey WarriorFormula
If you are capable try building your app on "Phonegap" platform, the developed apps will support multi-platforms including iOS, android and others.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

@WarriorFormula: If you're planning to make solid money and are targeting US/UK markets, then iOS is definitely the way to go. More paying users on that end for sure. If you're looking to hit up the other markets of the world, especially Asia/Euro, then Android is a better bet (Most stuff is free to download on android). This is only if you are choosing one over the other. If you build an HTML 5 Phone App via some of the tools already mentioned, then you'll be able to hit both markets. You can choose to go Native or non-native, but Native gets you into the app stores which is more of an official "APP" look and feel. However that is totally up to you.

Hope that helps!

Abhinav

Its better to have an app for both Android OS app development and iOS app development. Both of them covers different market segments so there is a chance of getting a greater number of customers from different segments.

Do let me know if it has helped and all the best!

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Go with iOS, I've had iPhone's and Android devices and the amount of junk apps in the Play Store is to much and there are way to many developers. In the Apple app store you must pay $99 to become a developer and they don't accept the junk apps. And if people can afford to buy the iPhone a .99$ app for them is nothing.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

Thus you are developing the mobile app for your customers, you need to discover what devices your target audience uses. Depending on the country you can find out whether they prefer iOS or Android StatCounter Global Stats - Browser, OS, Search Engine including Mobile Market Share In general, they both have their pros and cons you should keep in mind.
Apple iOS is a platform running Apple hardware (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad).
Pros: Quality and reliability
- High market share
- Widest range of applications
- Stability in development
Cons: Limitations in use
- High prices
- Limited choice of devices

Google Android is a young and fast-growing platform known for its extensive openness to software developers.
Pros: Highest market share
- Openness and flexibility in use
- Rapid development
- Wide range of devices and applications
- Integrated Google services
Cons:
- Short lifecycle of OS versions
- High energy consumption
- Malware vulnerability

If you have doubt and wanna cover more clients , I rather to use a platform with all type of output for different OS like PhoneGAP.

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

You need to reach almost ALL of your visitors on mobile too, so the only acceptable answer is BOTH. There are plenty of solutions where you can make cross platform or native mobile apps, for example the before mentioned appgeyser, or PhoneGap which make apps from HTML codes. Or for the native solutions theres InstApp (in my signature) where you can easily make native iPhone and Android apps without a single line of code. It's your choice, but there are plenty reasons against the HTML, and HTML based soultions (no push, no offline mode, not so nice and smooth UI and UX...)

Re: Creating app for Android/iOS?

For some time now iOS has been the main focus for a lot of developers because most users of apple products (it being a premium product) were more inclined to purchase apps.

However with more people adopting strategies like free apps to generate revenue it makes Android (which has been neglected by developers) an ideal target platform.

Ultimately the work you do early on in researching your market to understand what people are prepared to pay for (or download for free) will help you develop the right app and the best marketing approach.

The link to the free guide below gives you a good overview of the process and provides details of open source apps that you can use to learn and develop for iOS / iPhone / iPad and an update for Android is coming out shortly.

i Ads are great way to earn money what you can do is design a concept and hire coders and pay them for your app... and then submit that app to app store and then ... wait for approval... that's coolest way to make money and its all passive ..
