How to Setup a mobile website for FREE

here are some steps to setup a mobile version of your website.

step 1: install wordpress blog on a folder or subdomain on your server eg http://yourdomain.com/mobile or http://mobile.yourdomain.com

step 2: go to your wordpress installed directory or subdomain, then login and go to add plugin and search for "mobile phone plugin" choose one and install then activate the plugins. Then configure the plugin according to your configuration or your main site at http://yourdomain.com then start creating pages and add contents in the main website into your new mobile website you have created using word press platform and plugins. when adding contents make sure they are the same with the main website.

NOTE: To make sure the description and title of the mobile site indicates it is a mobile version site eg "Mobile -Terry Pizza Request Store - Best Pizza In The World" so the user searching the search engines will see it. Now go to the main site http://yourdomain.com and add some image of mobile phones like blackberry, ipad, andriod on top and below your website. so they can select by them site which device they use. But if you want it to auto switch then you can use a java script to auto direct to the mobile version which is http://mobile.yourwebsite.com or http://yourwebsite.com/mobile

also note that when access the mobile version from your pc it looks like a website but from a mobile phone it look different. so that is how to get a mobile version of your website up without spending a dim.

Good idea but a major hassle if your main site is only a few pages of HTML or php.

In that case it would be easier to just have a seperate CSS for mobile browsers and have the site use that.

You are right, have a sperate css will save a hole lot of task. I agree with you, you can still use one css if you like it that way.

I will recommend wp touch it is free and also there is paid one. You get it in your word press installation.

Go to plugins-add- then seach for "wp touch" that is it, then install and activate.

Just use a Responsive Wordpress Theme. Simple.

Responsive themes are great for desktop and tablets visitors but if you want to offer the best mobile experience they typically fall short... responsive is a quick way to get your site and content to be accessible on a mobile device but don't get confused between mobile ready and mobile optimized solutions and sites - there's a huge difference... a lot of designers/developers are going with responsive because its an easy and fast partial solution, and there really isn't anything on the market that gives them a cost effective alternative.

Look at the corporate top 500 companies I guarantee you will find +95% are using mobile optimized sites delivered either standalone or with adaptive content... for them its about the end user experience... to me that speaks volumes... its also what Google recommends under the GoMo initiative from a mobile user perspective...

Google does state from a search point of view that responsive is recommended - but so is adaptive/dynamic content delivered on the same url and so is a stand alone site mobile site if configured correctly it just means on the latter they have to do extra work.

FYI WP-Touch uses an adaptive design approach in that it renders different HTML depending on the user agent viewing the site - albeit in a very limited manner... out of the box i personally think its more suited to WP blogs and lacks those features that you would associate with a regular mobile site required for a brick and mortar business.

Thanks for your input. To optimize a regular website for mobile requires a plan
and the application one is using.

I will recommend having a mobile version of your website to be on your own server not another.
