JPG or PNG for logos?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hiya,

I have yet to grab a client, but that's for another thread. But I was thinking ahead. I've seen some mobile sites, and sites that use JPG logos always tend to be blurry/pixelated. PNG is always more clear.

I know PNGs are larger in size and that's not mobile data friendly, but I think it's a worthy trade-off because once the PNG is loaded, it's in the cache, no?

And advice?

JPG images can look just as good as PNG images can... it just depends on how they're compressed (any decent image editing software will allow you to adjust the compression values -- and it's always a trade-off between quality and file size).

That said, some older mobile phones do not support PNG images (especially transparent PNG's), so if it's important for your images to be compatible with older devices, then go with JPG.

And don't forget to compress the images as much as you can (within reason), as it's important that the pages on a mobile site load as quickly as possible.

GIF and JPG images are recommended for mobile web but PNG is not yet a recommendation, though you don't have to always follow the recommendations. I prefer using .gif for logos with less colors such as text based logos or simple shape logos, and .jpg for picture/photo type logos with more colors. I use PNG images only if I can't create a GIF or JPG version of it within the same quality and size range.

I always like to use a PNG file for a logo. I didn't know about this.

Thanks to this thread.

Thanks to this thread.
If you have a nice looking transparent PNG that you want to use, then one option would be to serve up that image to newer devices (via 'user agent' detection), and serve up a JPG version for everything else.

For logos or images with less colors I'm using gif or png with less colors so the size is smaller.

If there are more colors I'm using jpg with a 30%-50% image quality in Photoshop - Save for Web

This is a great tool for minimizing PNG's file size:

If you do not need transparent, JPG is always the better choice for size and the quality.

JPEG images will look fine if they are saved properly. The distortion issue you speak of has nothing to do with the image being a JPEG, it's to do with how the image was saved and at what quality.

For mobile sites I always prefer gif for images with few colors and jpeg for more detailed images.

What about Dots Per Inch? Is 72 DPI recommended for web & mobile both?

Sorry I can not agree with you.

JPG is best for photographic style images, many colors and it can compress these well.

GIF is better than jpg when you have an image with a limited number of colors and large areas of a single color.

PNG for transparency, JPEG for everything else. 72dpi for anything online.

In most cases you can just put the background in the jpeg image so it will still look exactly like a transparent image only it will be a jpeg.
