Gatekeepers love mobile mock-ups...what about owners?
Share on:

I am finding that it is easy to "wow" gatekeepers with Ipad mock-ups of before/after images of mobile-friendly sites. I hear "yeah, I'll tell "John" about it." I typically ask for an appointment and give out one of my brochures. But then I don't hear back. I call to schedule and many times hear "he's not interested now."

My feeling if the owner SEES the before/after mock-up, then that will convince them.

The sites that I've sold have been where I meet w/ the owner.

Others have similar experiences?

Haven't had much of the same experience (I've had decent luck so far getting to the owners, but I am kind of new, so may just be beginners luck).

If/when I do experience this, here is how I would respond to the gatekeeper.

"I understand, not everyone is. Can I ask you one more question though? Just in an effort to try to improve myself, did he by chance mention why he's not interested? Did he not like the design? Is the price out of his budget? Or was it something else?"

Wait for answer, which will probably be "he did not specify why, he just said he's not interested."

Then follow that with "I see. Is there any chance I might could speak to him for just 2 minutes to inquire, or be sent to his voicemail to leave a brief message?"

You may or may not get through to the owner doing this, but you definitely won't if you don't, so give it a shot.

Good luck!

You've answered your own question. You know/feel that the owner will like the mock-up, yet you are showing a gatekeeper. Why? The gatekeeper has no business seeing your product/service as they are not the DM, and they don't make the financial decisions. Stop wasting your time and just walk in, and ask for an appointment (or call because you can reach more people). When they ask you what you are doing, leave your card, or say what you're doing "I've got a mock up of your site for Dr. Willis to see, when should I stop back by/how can I get a few minutes with him?" That's it. Stop showing something to someone that can't purchase it and can shut you down before you get to the DM!
