| REAL mobile strategy = building mobile experiences for users based on their last action/activity
Ive been doing mobile for a longggg time now. And i read all these threads about mobile "THIS OR THAT, which is better" EVERYONE IS WRONG. If i hear someone call it a mobile website again im going to pop! haha. Its about building mobile experiences for users based on their last action/activity. THE GOLDEN TICKET TO VALUE IN MOBILE IS THE REFERRER! MOBILE WEB VS MOBILE NATIVE (apps) I couldnt agree more --- however i think the point is being missed here by all involved with mobile marketing.... mobile marketing, like any form of marketing is a multi-pronged objective. You should be investing in mobile website value adds (i.e. click engagement and local hardware accessibility -location, email, call, sms, social etc) and working toward building the business an app with different value adds. It should be noted that there are other apps out there namely groupon, yelp, etc, that provide advertising opportunities for businesses looking to PUSH notify new and existing customers (arguably the primary value of building apps for your brick and mortar clients). Those platforms are INFINITELY more robust than anything you'd build for your brick and mortar business owner. MOBILE MARKETING CAMPAIGN: Build mobile web experiences, take advantage of robust existing deal platforms, advertise, and engage socially. MOBILE REFERRER = KING Last comment - Mobile web isnt about building a mobile version of your website.... thats just the first step. You should have a unique mobile website for each person depending on where they are coming from. I.e. if someone is coming from a google local search result, deliver a pricing and contact information heavy landing page to %allvisitsfromgoogle%. If a user is coming from facebook - check their referral url and deliver a more social experience for the visitor. Pictures, videos, products, descriptions, social widgets, interactive user interfaces, Pinterest style design etc. If a user is coming from an advertisement click from your in-app mobile advertising campaigns. You presented a 30% off coupon for instance. Dont just send the user to a "mobile version" of your website... send them to a unique mobile experience for that deal. In this case it might be a good idea to take them to the app store where your business's mobile application is! CHECK THE REFERRERS!!! You should have a unique mobile landing page for each of your marketing efforts. Your mobile version of your website should be accessible through a bar at the top or bottom of the unique landing pages to help users find it if they want it. That's mobile web. That how you make money in mobile. Pitching the fact that mobile is about connecting with people the way they want to be connected with, at any given time based on the most recent thing they were doing --- CHECK THE REFERRER. CHEERS -- hope this helps open peoples mind to the potential of mobile for their mobile businesses and services. Remember think mobile experience, not mobile website. PS pardon typos gotta jet to a meeting, just wanted to share some insight. Would love to hear some thoughts! Bonn, you have a very unique concept that I haven't thought of before although I have been building mobile websites and tools for a long time. Actually, this can be used on desktop sites too. I liked the idea. It will introduce more work to the designer for sure, but it will definitely increase the likelihood of the visitor taking the action that the business owner wants instead of sending them to a plain mobile home page.
