Appointment reminders.

Curious what people charge for that as it seems like low SMS usage and they would handle it in house so you would basically be a utility.

Speaking of SMS , it is just great tool , simple , yet very effective if done right. but the catch is again building the list. If you choose to use thirdparty provider than be aware that the regulation might bite you .. most recently Twilio , google and some others were sued for sending unauthorized messages and from what I read , fines could be as much as 250$/unauthorized message sent .. If you are doing it , do it right , being a small biz the last thing you want is some court cases to deal with.

Use it remind them of appointments coming up or have it timed so every 4-6 weeks they get a text saying about the service you own and that they havent seen you in a while or something.

You can use SMS for tons of things, not just restaurants.

I put together an app for daycare centers and schools whereby the owner (or principal) can send out emergency or informative text alerts to subscribers from their cell phone. Parents/students subscribe via a widget on the website or by texting a keyword. Only select people have permission to broadcast to the entire list.

Or how about soliciting customer reviews via text message "conversations". Dave Iago had a terrific WSO recently concerning this, but you can build the same app with OpenVBX and a few plugins which are free. Take the best reviews collected and mark them up with Google rich snippet code and put on your client's websites. Collecting reviews via text message would work great for restaurants while customers are waiting for their checks.

I used to manage an I.T. department who produced mobile sites.

We used to use SMS to notify people just a little while after they arrive at the event. The response rates to this were insane because we would tell the attendees they were about to receive a message, then they'd all come through and people would act.

Personally I think that there are more flexible channels to use these days though.

In my country, hospitals and clinics used them to alert of waiting time and queues.

Yes, very helpful for Mobile Marketing Plan like sending broadcasts to your list for regular special offers. Offers that have a time urgency factor to keep things fresh and exciting. Example, "Tonight ONLY" offer.

It is a numbers game in the tenths of pennies, which amounts to a monthly charge. For instance, about 100 contacts on your list, and three "blasts" per month costs around $48 to $59 per month, with several other variables that change this price. Overages, let's say another 100 texts go out, cost between $7 and $9 per hundred... something like that. It's all based on the numbers in your business. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, dentists, doctors, taxi companies.

But seriously, don't overcomplicate things. Yes, restaurants and bars are an obvious answer so why not go after restaurants and bars?! Make it easy for yourself.
