I'm new to mobile: What are your recommendations for building a simple HTML/CSS mobile site.

I am new to building mobile websites. I have a client who has a simple HTML/CSS website. She wants to add a mobile site.

I'm looking for some advice from experienced mobile site builders that might help me shorten the learning curve a bit.

Yes, I am searching Google and the Warrior Forum but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe Mobley

Hey Joe - my advice, starting with a great template can shorten the learning curve and help you get a mobile site together quickly.

WillR, Quentin and Kevin Koop here have all offered some nice templates over the past year or two, and there are also a few competent wysiwyg site builders here too if care to go that route. Just search the WSO forum for those warriors or site builders and you should find them.

Cheers,

Steve

Steve,

I appreciate it. I have seen Will and Quentin on the WF. I will check out Kevin.

The other topic that I'm trying to get some more information is device detection. Is this something I should get up to speed on? Is this handled by the device's browser? Code on the website? Etc.

Again, thanks for the help.

I am currently struggling with device detection (and redirection).

From what I have seen so far, there are two approaches to consider:
  • Detect the screen width (horizontal resolution), and redirect from the desktop website to the mobile if it's below a certain size.
  • Detect the browser agent, e.g., Android, iPhone, and a slew of others, to make the same decision
In either case, the desktop website has to have code installed on it to perfom the redirection.

I have been working with some of WillR's products, and am very pleased with their quality, and with the prompt and helpful support he has provided.

I'm reading some pretty good things about JumpMobi. My issue is that I'd like to stay with HTML/CSS if I can.

Thanks,

Joe Mobley

I've used both methods DJL mentioned, using scripts or code provided by the developers of the themes I've purchased here. I'm unsure which method I like best or which performs best , but I believe user agent switching is probably the ideal way to do things. Either way, you'll need access to the clients website to insert some basic code into their pages.

In regards to JumpMobi, I didn't mention it because you mentioned html/css here, but the developer Jay Moreno is a fellow warrior and Jump Mobi is the best thing I've seen for using Wordpress to create mobile sites with a feature list a mile long. I know he used to offer an agent detection plugin for WP sites that I believe is bundled with JumpMobi now, but read through that thread and I think you'll find better answers about redirection than I could give here.

Cheers,

Steve

JumpMobi for sure.

Wordpress is still HTML and CSS. It's just a different way to create the final site. Most people find a point and click Wordpress solution such as JumpMobi much easier than regular HTML and CSS.
