"Yeah, we haven't gotten a mobile site yet, because it'll cost $5,000." And, yes, he had a straight face when he said it. -- TW |

I think he were approached by someone selling app development because $5000 is something common. He might be confused about iphone apps and mobile sites.

Build a demo mobile site of the guys Index page on your own domain/host, then show him the site with a better price that the guy will be comfortable paying for, or get him signed up for a recurring monthly payment with a deposit up front. | |

Watch out thou - you don't have to sound "cheap" as that guy things a mobile website is *worth* 5 grands but he doesn't have the budget. At the same time it's a bit shortsighted to do it for half the price and give him a product we all know should not cost more than $500. If you propose him a *mobile marketing strategy* that will help him grow his business he will probably spend the $5,000 (in one year or so, not at once, obviously), be a happy customer and refer you to his friends - thus making you a happier entrepreneur. |

I had a similar experience, got a telephone call asking how much for a 20 page mobile site so I told them £750 then they told me they had been quoted £3000 for a mobile optimized website and questioned our quality...we did a mock up (they had 3 other sites) their creative director was amazed and gave it the thumbs up and we got the order for all the sites!

This kind of thing has been posted several times in this forum! If this happens to you don't fall for what might be a trap. Educate your potential client give them a realistic price and knowing that he might be able to spend more upsell later! These crazy prices are also called Price gouging USA.gov: Price Gouging I don't think it is should be what ever "the market is willing to bear" but rather what the customer is "willing"pay! what market will bear IMO - Use common sense and you will do great! I think you're right about that. Probably got a quote for a mobile app. Could have been for both android/iphone as well, we just dont know the details. Lots of things could cause a price quote to be that high.

I have done a test and called 4 companies that offer mobile website designs in the nearest city to me in the UK and the cheapest was £2300 and the most expensive £3,471!

Gotta love the mom and pop stores. They look at everything 21st century-ish as high value.
