Don't beat me up here..but please explain to me why there are still mobile website consultants? Who are you selling? When I work with local business I only use responsive themes and they look volumes better than some of these redirect sites. What am I missing?

It depends what type of sites you are talking about. Blogs and large informational websites or local business type websites such as restaurants and the like?

A responsive site usually ignores some of the main reasons why you want a mobile website in the first place. The time it takes for the page to load and also the information on the mobile website should be customized for mobile users since they are usually looking for different information to regular desktop users.

A responsive website simply shows the same content in a different layout but it does not customize the features and content for mobile users nor does it usually optimize the page size and speed.

Just as a responsive website can look nice or ugly depending on who designed it, the same goes with a standalone mobile website. They can look as great or as ugly as you want depending on who designed it. But how good a mobile website looks is not determined by if it is responsive or standalone.

All I will say is that some of the biggest websites in the world still use standalone mobile versions...

https://m.facebook.com
http://en.m.wikipedia.org
http://m.yahoo.com
http://amazon.com/mobile
https://touch.www.linkedin.com
http://m.bing.com

That ought to count for something.

If you are still unsure I highly recommend you read right through this following thread:

Because one in three searches are made from a mobile devices? Therefore losing a potential 33% of your market? I wonder.

Will hit the nail on the head as usual. I'll just add this:

If a company is going to be doing a new site or full redesign soon, deciding whether to make it responsive or get a separate dedicated mobile site is something for them to consider, and there are ups and downs to both.

However, if they are not planning on doing such any time soon, and their current site is crap on a phone, then a dedicated mobile site is a quick, easy, inexpensive solution.

To me the mobile consultant is becoming even more important. As things change, a consultant needs to stay up to date with what is happening and make their suggestions on the facts of today. ie. responsive themes are not new. Websites now have 3 targets - desktop, phone and tablet. Responsive can be great to deal with the desktop and the tablet. Although as Will pointed out, most responsive site builders available are quite slow and people are expecting desktop performance on a smartphone today. And why not. If your create the mobile site correctly, it can perform fast and one of the primary reasons that businesses want a stand alone mobile site. The information that a mobile user seeks has always been known to be quite different from a desktop user. So to provide a much better user experience, you need to tailor the mobile site to be efficient to those wants. That requires research into the businesses users which is another consultant service. Also becoming more of a factor today is adding an adaptive layer to the website to handle phones. Now instead of just reformatting the data and displaying it on a phone, you can shoose what you want to display from the regular site, how to display it and add other info not on the regular site.

So if you think that responsive sites are the only way to build a mobile website, you are doing your clients a big disservice. Now that mobile users will be eclipsing desktop users, the importance of a mobile site is becoming the dominant area of focus. Mobile users are also very impatient. As they start to view more and more mobile sites, their expectations will rise as to what they consider acceptable. If the info they are looking for is not on the screen when they come calling, don't expect them to start searching. They will just leave and look at the next site. And it better load fast or they won't wait - they'll hit the back button before your site has even loaded. And Google does measure if someone leaves your site quickly and this can affect your ranking if your bounces are high.

So IMHO, a mobile consultant is becoming more and more important every day to analyze a businesses needs/budget. and then to suggest the best options. Responsive is just one choice but only for certain situations. Suggesting one today to a client could mean that it might be more of a detriment in the near future and will need to be redone. It's a consultants job to make sure this doesn't happen and increase the ROI of the original project.

You don't need a mobile website consultant. What you need is a designer who would create a responsive websites that will form into any kind of devices that you are using.
