Free mobile apps vs. paid

What plenty of things do you have, that you’ve obtained for free and keep obtaining pretty much daily/weekly? Yes - these are apps! I bet the majority of apps on your iPhone or iPad belong to a freemium model - free to download with in-app purchase inside or free with ads.
Question is - why does this trend of moving to a freemium model exist at all? Why so?

We’ve passed the App Store 5 years anniversary this summer, let’s dig a bit into reasons why free apps dominate. Mary Ellen from Flurry shares her vision on paid apps vs.free -

I think it's mostly the fact that once you hook a consumer in, then you are able to get them to do whatever you want from that point out. You are giving away the access to your app, but that doesn't mean that the content within cannot be monetized or used to benefit you in some way.

I look at a game like the recent Candy Crush. It got people addicted within the first 30 levels then wanted you to share their message on Facebook. Then from there if you played too much, then you were forced to either ask your friends on Facebook for more lives (spreading their message) or... You had to pay to get more lives.

The concept here is genius, and they made a killing from it, and the same model works throughout different niches. You just have to find the way to do it correctly!
