Android vs iOS
Share on:

I'm interested in looking at developing an application for android and iOS devices for a social media site.
Which operating system do you suppose would be best to initially launch the application on?
Looking particularly at the comparisons of the various positives and negatives of app development on Android and iOS?

Hi! Here is some information for you:

Android. Google brings Android users an opportunity to get a device that's ready for work. It's facilitated by a rich variety of integrated Google services (such as Search, Maps, Docs, News, Talk, Now, Google+, and much more). There are multiple features that can be brought to or used in custom mobile apps. These include Android Beam technology (based on NFC), bi-directional and vertical text support, Wi-Fi Direct and external display support, expandable notifications and widgets, geolocation, in-app payments, social media integration, and more.

iOS. Apple's OS has always been known for a simple and intuitive user interface. The latest iOS6 gives an updated and improved set of standard features, still lacking multitasking. iOS requires a number of Apple products to run and synchronize its ecosystem, where Mac is the core. Apple constantly brings in new features for software developers. Notable ones include iCloud storage, Passbook integration, geolocation, in-app payments etc. All of these can be implemented in your applications.

The Apple store currently offers 700,000 apps, 250,000 of which are available for the ipad. Most developers prefer to develop games for iOS before they develop for Android.

I'd go iOS if you're certain you want to develop on that platform. Android users for whatever reason don't really download apps compared to iOS users.

Plus iOS (and Windows) have a review process. If it passes Apple's, then easy to port to Android. But if you do Android first, and have to make modifications for Apple, it means you'll (most likely) have to update the Android app for consistency.

Warning - Apple's review process is irritating and unintentionally quite funny (especially after a glass of wine).

I think you should go for Android...People have more options with Android as they can even buy a low budget Android smartphone.. You may get more exposure...

I would develop for both if you can, but if you have to pick one I'd go for iOS. There are much more people using the App store on iOS compared to Google Play, so you'll get much more downloads and no exposure. The only downside is that a fee is required to publish an app, ans you have to wait while they review the app unlike Android.

Are you going to charge for your app? If you look at it, iOS users are more willing to pay for apps compared to Android users. I believe that most major apps launch with iOS first. This does not imply that iOS is superior to Android but this should be considered because targeting iOS users has lesser problems to deal with.

Could not agree more. Android is probably much better than iOS, but most of the popular apps are/were launched in iOS first.

So if you are thinking about app building, start with iOS.

The answer is simple...you go with the OS who get the most market share first

1) Android
2) Iphone
3) Windows phone
4) Blackbery

SUGGESTIONS: You should consider a Web application instead of a native application for many reasons

1) A Web application will work on all OSes
2) If you Application need the Internet...you go with an Web application
3) Easier to maintain
5) Cost less
6) Fast design
7) and more...

yep, one consideration is smart phone screen size, with my galaxy note3 i have enough screen to navigate normal web pages no problem, something that postage stamp screen iphones struggle with and need native apps.

I think the trend will continue w/ larger screen phones, apple has been inching up a 1/4" at a time, in a couple years they will have caught up. LOL.

If making apps is your business you have to consider both platforms. At the same time you have to keep in mind that there are more Android phones in the world. It's just depends on what type of apps you are going to develop really - games, business apps, eBooks etc.

I would suggest Android simply because I think it would be an easier platform to test on, IOS is more proprietary and in my opinion would be more difficult to get to work.

and-roid.........................|.................... .i-phone
wider reach [android]
Free apps work better...........................- audience pay for good apps
too many phone models.........................- limited model and os version [less customizations]
easy to get into...................................- apple store bit difficult

many more difference when it comes to demographics, usage, purchasing power... do a bit of research n you'll get ur answer.

If you're serious, then obviously iOS is your first choice.

If you just want to play around for fun then try Android (it's cheaper to get started and apparently easier to programme). If you're going to build a successful social media app (like everyone else wants to) then you will have to develop for iOS then port to Android if it's a success. Going "backwards" from Android to iOS will be a pain as someone already mentioned above. The phone saturation is about 50/50 (with Android starting to lead last I checked) but as for apps - iOS is where the pros live.

That's what I reckon anyway.

iOS apps make far more money than Android, but Android is destroying the market at the moment. Sales projections for next year have 50 percent of all computer devices marked as tablets with 65 percent of these sales being projected to be Android devices.

Also, in the 3rd quarter of this year, Android dominated with 81 percent of all mobile units shipped. Android powered 211 million units out of 261 million units shipped. iOS in comparison had only 16.9 percent of the sales during that quarter. While people make more money on apps for iOS, it seems like Android is beginning to dominate the market more and more.

No doubt, Android is definitely at boom. You start with either of them, you're going to earn good. The only difference is that, Android App development is easy to start with. My personal suggestion is that you start with Android and then move to iOS later.
Good Luck.

hi claudia,

its no wonder that apple simplifies a lot the development of any app to be uploaded to its marketplace..if u are very talented and expert on handling with coding..there should not be any problem to select ios vs android..just keep in mind that with android..maybe you wiill be forced to adapt some features of the app to different mobile devices as u know android is widely used on various sort of smartphones and tablets!! so i would go on the ios path to start out and once you get some money and background on the business.. just jump right into the android platform!!

hope this clears u up a little on your concern!! good luck Claudia!!

Android market is more popular comparing to IOS market. Android phone is cheap in rate and user can easily buy android mobile that's why the today lots of people using android mobile and android console account fee is only pay to only one time to Google play store to buy developer account and in IOS account user have to pay every years to maintain the account. If anyone looking for buying android account then PM me. I have account in bulk for sale at very Good price.

First thing you have to do is to identify where your target audience are, which country are you targeting, platform, demographics etc matters first...if you are looking mature markets like US then iOS have better placed and if you targeting developing nations like china, india then android may score better....again ultimately the importance should be given to the outcome, functionality and user friendlessness, it may be easy to develop an app in particular platform but what if your TG is in some other platform......

You can start with Android. As it was said above, it is not very difficult to develop an application for this platform. If everything will work well then you can think to iOS

iphone users tend to spend more than android ones. But there are more android users than iphone. So, if its a free app, go for android. If you're going to charge for it, ios is the way to go.

Hello,
Both platforms are best and having strong ground grip on app development market. But at initial level, when you going to start developing then start form Android. Because it is open source and many resources available which helps you in app development. Once you create your foundation in app development then switch on to iOS app development. And if you want to choose particular platform both of them as per my review go for Android.
