For people developing for android don't forget about amazon market. Gets good downloads and LOT less competative. Requires very little extra work to upload. Only thing is they do review the apps and you wont get away with anything that could be copyrighted, name etc. |

Android has a bigger base than iOS. But I would suggest launching the app on both the stores. Many a times, an app might not do well on iOS but gets freaking number of downloads on Google Playstore and vice-versa.

First off you need data. Which country will you be targeting ? Free or Paid app ? What is the competition on both platforms for an app similar to yours? Get specific download info for social media apps to see how they are doing. There are already a bunch BTW ! If it is a paid app it will more than likely do better on iOS, however it is more expensive to advertise for. In the USA iOS is doing great. Android does well in many countries and does well in the USA, but iPhone users in general spend more money. |

I have been looking into this topic recently for an app I want developed. Apparently you can code the app in HTML5 using phone gap and you can publish the app for both platforms.

I think both are excellent OS's - I use both daily. My concern with Android, and the complete opposite to Apple off course, is the profitability of the hardware supporting it. If you're choosing an Android device, it might be worth doing your research before choosing a manufacturer. Indeed whilst Samsung will be around this time next year - they're a huge conglomerate off course - a bunch of other brands probably won't be. HTC for example could be sold or broken up in the near future. The same could be applied to other loss making manufacturers, which make up the majority of the market. Fortunately, for Google and Android, low cost Asian brands like Huawei appear to be saving the day. |

Of course ! Android. There are plenty of handsets working on droid, you just can't go with iOS alone. But , for a business i'd rather say make app for both platform.

I think you should go for both...but to launch your app for ios you need to first pay and after their approval only then your app will be available in ios market, unlike android where no such procedure is required to launch an app on playstore.

Android platform is relatively better because it is user friendly plus it doesn't require any special operating system for development.

My two cents, look at your target market first. What kind of phone/tablet do they use? Let that be your guide. |

Users of iOS tend to spend more money on average but Android has a larger user base and it's growing rapidly. So if you're going for a premium experience, it may be a better idea to start off on iOS. But if you're going to be ad supported, Android would probably be the better choice. Either way, both ecosystems are massive and you can't really go wrong regardless of which one you choose to launch on first. |

Since they introduced iOS 8 with more advantages for app developers, it is probably a good reason to develope an app for iOS. But they also have big problems with several glitches so not every iOS user would update to iOS 8 now.

Both Android and iOS have many advantages and some disadvantages. But when compared both for developing an application, Android is the best.

It depends what is your primary requirements. I am an owner of mobile app CheerGram which is available in Android right now. Also, planning to Launch the same for iOS. As far as own concerns Android's guidelines to publish app is much more easier than iOS, that takes 2-3 weeks or even more to publish your app live.

i will advice if you are starting newly, go the iOS way because the apple screening process will help you produce a good app which you can then port to android.

Aside from the reasons above, in terms of availabilty, Android also kicks off more. These are Many phones and tablets, including Kindle Fire(modified android), LG, HTC, Samsung, Sony, Motorola, Nexus, and others more than ios. Also, look at the following in terms of crashes per apps (acc. to Forbes) | |

Android is well known for its customization, as it is a open media source it gives users to install a no of application. If I talk about ios then it is known for being quick, clear and secure. So if you need future advancement in your application then Android may be an option for you.

I would like to share that users of android are more than IOS apps. So you if you develop application for both OS then its good to provide a choice to your users to use this application in their IOS and Android all devices.

It's important to note that while Android has greater market penetration, they also have greater hardware/software fragmentation (more difficult to develop for the whole market). Android users also, on the whole, spend far less money than iOS users.
