I recently contacted the local business networking team and asked if I could do a talk on 'the benefits of mobile websites for local businesses'. The organizer found a slot for me to do a 30 minute talk the following meeting. I turned up with a QR code, a mobile and an iPad, I went through then benefits telling these local business owners how they can make their own mobile website for free! Then I offered the last 10 minutes to Q&As, I walked off stage and the next thing I knew I had people asking me other questions relevant to their business (that they did not want to air publicly.) I handed out around 30 business cards during this time and over the next 3 days I had 15 calls from these business owners, asking how much it was for us to create a mobile website and host it. Then I arranged to go to their offices to discuss it further. Having booked 2 full days of appointments, I met them all and did a mock up of each site, so they could have a play around with it. I priced some sites (depending on page numbers) between £199 and £299 (not a lot I know but wait...) The reason for the low price was that on completion and receipt of payment (cheque) I asked them to write down at least 3 contacts they knew who would benefit from a mobile website. Some give a lot more, some just gave 3. Out of the 30 who took my card, I sold 13 mobile sites, but more importantly I had a pocket full of leads - around 45 warm leads! I called them the rest of the week and made appointments to go and see them, 'as their friend had recommended me'. It was cool to show them the friends site as a testimonial, 2 actually called their friends up and asked what they thought of the service! Now the thing was I took a 50/50 deposit, with 50% on completion, what I did was tell them as I did the first bunch, that the low price was only for the local business area and I pointed them to competitors who are charging £1500 for the same product. And I said on completion I would like 50% and at least 3 leads. This time though, the price went up £299 to £399 (tier 2). Out of the 45 leads - over 3 weeks I got 39 sales, now these 39 gave me the leads and I thought, there is no way I can get round all these people - 127 in total! So we took on a couple of salesmen who we trained, this is the first full week for them and 1 has seen 35 clients and sold 28 sites, the second has seen 30 clients and sold 30 sites. The price for these sites is £399 to £499. We have decide to cap the prices at £499 and £599 from now on, but this works and now with the amount of warm leads being generated, we have to take on 2 more sales people - otherwise these warm leads will be wasted. The plan is to have 6 sales people in total, who will be out everyday, then as soon as they have a yes, they text or email us after the appointment and we start building the mobile sites - they will even carry mobile merchant terminals to take the 50% deposit, this is cheaper than Paypal as we only pay 1% of the value in fees and the money is in the account within 72 hours. Anyone can do this, start off small and build until you can not do any more yourself, then hire some people, scale it that is when you see real money. Hope it helps. |

Congratulations. The thrill of new business growth is always an amazing one! Make sure you are always tracking your numbers very closely and thinking of ways you can add profits to your business. Always be looking for other sources of income as well, and know when it's time for you to LEAVE. Don't let an overzealous ego get the best of you and cloud you from seeing it's time to go. The beauty of making money is that it CAN make MORE money! "Don't keep all your eggs in one basket" as they say. |

Great post! Very inspiring! I was wondering (lol, always looking for details) what you showed them prior to making the mockup - or what do you show them that secures step 1 (the making of the mock up with a 50% deposit). Or if I have it backwards - did you do the mock up prior to meeting them at their office? Have you tried doing the meeting over the internet? Walking them through a mockup on the phone? This might not close as many but you could close more by volume if you didn't have to travel to each office for the face to face. Good for you! It's action that seems to work!! (imagine that, lol) cheers, m |

MrIMVO, To answer your questions in order: I show them the friends mobile website who recommended us! At the bottom of the webpage is a link to our site Internet meetings would not work in the UK. Traveling is not an issue, the prospects are within a 15 minute drive. Dexter.

I presume that is in the USA, not here in the UK. I did join the Small Business Federation only £75, but you get lots of opportunities... |

no Im in UK, South Wales , this area the Chambers are very insular and insecure but your angle and approach is great and I am not knocking it , just my Chambers . Also joined the FSB for a year, went via a well respected long time local member to their head office to become an approved supplier of something they didn't currently offer their members (mobile marketing solutions ) and they weren't interested as it was too futuristic for them to get involved in, hilarious even though I showed them how they would make £XXXXX from the deal with very little work for them , FSB Fed of Small Business with the emphasis on SMALL.

Well done Dex - congrats. It's amazing how much smoother the day/week/month can go when you've got a pocket full of aces just waiting to be sold. =) Referrals have been MAJOR for me. In fact, my biggest client to date was a result of a word of mouth but then Google Algos hit. On to bigger and better... |

Mobile websites are really beneficial for the business marketing. If you can develop an application related to your business, then it will also promote your product or service in short span of time.

Ingenious marketing strategy Dex. I'm wondering though, are you getting any price resistance from the referrals having been told by the referrers what they paid?

This is hilarious! I've been doing this already for 3 months and it definitely works! Better thing to do is tell them its 40 bucks a month for maintenance if they choose. and then you have a residual income! I'm currently pulling in some good money on a monthly basis off this offline business model.

Impressive and very inspirational. And for your information, your inspiration just hit scandinavia thanks! Wondering one thing though, what solution do you reveal about building their own mobile website? I mean do you show them builders like duda mobile etc that are free to use? |

No objects as the people who refer us do not mention the price unless they speak to the buyer. I have had the odd one ask why the difference and I told them, the previous buyers where on a discount so we could build our portfolio. - seems to work and when you compare the price to a local company who is charging £2500 for a mobile site, it is a no brainer... |

No! We do a demo of their site once they agree to a meeting so view the demo, telling them it will be fully working - takes around 20 minutes. Dex.

Hi Dex, hope you don't mind a coupla Q's... Have you met any potential clients that did not have an existing desktop website? If you have, how did you "activate" their mobile site without the usual redirect script ...(dot mobi, maybe)? Have you had to provide hosting on your server for any of the clients' mobile sites, so far ? Or maybe ... Do you sell mobile sites ONLY to businesses who already have desktop sites ? In my city, I've met several small businessmen who are receptive to the idea of having a mobile site, but these same guys have absolutely no interest in a desktop site. If you met any of those, how did you deal with them ? I'd appreciate a response. Thanks. |

Never come up against an existing business owner here in the without a web presence. But if I did, I would host their site on .mobi Yes, we offer hosting for mobile sites and only charge £35 per year. Personally, I would take the order, build the mobile site and host it for them. Dexter.

Silvio, We do not 'sell them', they are already pre-sold from the referral from their friends in business. The business owners we talk too understand that this is new technology and want to invest in it as it WILL benefit their business, by increasing sales. Yes, you an use my copy providing we have a link to our website (cheeky aren't I!) :p Dexter.
