Slightly confused. Diff between sms and push msging? What's the difference -- and what are the pros and cons to each? Mainly I'm thinking in terms of local offline biz's. Thanks. -- TW |

Well SMS everyone knows what it is, so i don't need to explain. Push Messaging or Push Notifications it's an alternative to SMS, but IT ONLY WORKS ONLINE. To use Push Messaging you need to have 3G or 4G on the phone. Ex: Let's think someone put on their phone an alarm for when a soccer game its 0-1. You have 3 options. SMS - When the game is 0-1 the person gets an SMS, the bad part of this is that normaly it's paid, but it have a very nice advantage.. you don't need internet :D Polling - The other way it's your phone stay in a infinite loop asking for the result and when it reach 0-1 it will notify you, BUT it will consume your battery as you never saw! Push msg/notif - Alternative to polling and SMS! In this aproach your phone opens a connection to a server(TCP) and waits it to send the result (0-1) since it is passive, it will not consume 80% of the battery of a polling system. BUT it needs internet to work! A decent application have the both methods SMS and Push, and uses the SMS when push is not available. |
Re: Slightly confused. Diff between sms and push msging? Are you anywhere near Praia Da Rocha? Stayed there many times. |
Re: Slightly confused. Diff between sms and push msging? Another good example is: When your sim card is installed in your phone and your phone is on, you are connected to your phone companies network. Thus allowing them to send SMS to you. When you have a app installed on your phone, you have a connection to where the app is hosted only when you are connected to the internet. |
