Is Non-Responsive Web Design Limiting My SEO?

If google prefers responsive web design (thought I saw that somewhere on wf), then a website without responsive web design would be behind the 8 ball correct? So, I guess I need to assure my website is responsive, thus my questions:

1. If I already have the wp-touch plugin installed (free version) on my wordpress website, does that make it "responsive?"

2. If not, if I upgrade to the paid version of wp-touch, does that make it responsive?

3. Is the only way to get a responsive website involve major custom rework of css and design layout?

You can go to fiverr and pay someone $5 per page

...yeah, for junk.

Google have said many things. There are just as many references to proper mobile websites as there are to designs which "respond". What google want is a good mobile experience. They don't really care how you do it. If you want to send them to a proper mobile website - fine.

If you want to have your current website move and squash content into a long thin column (as most responsive designs do) then that is also acceptable to Google. Personally I build proper mobile sites so I'm biased towards the user experience and put a lot of focus on that.

Check your website on a mobile (smart) phone. If it displays a different look (or website) suited more to narrow smart phones then it's responsive to the device you're on. If you had a proper mobile website, you'd know it so I'm going to suggest your site either adjusts the display according to the screen size or it's not responsive.

Yes, making a single website "responsive" can be a very big job so as you have to hire expensive designers and coders to give a good experience to mobile visitors (like some of the big businesses like banks do) or people go with one of the many "responsive" themes floating around and do it themselves giving their websites a new look.

Great article which re-inforces my experience. It was funny to see all the "responsive guys" chime in and disagree...lol
