Has anyone tried to build their own SMS list to market to? I've been thinking about building a landing page for people to opt in either by phone or by email. I'll incentive the opt in by offering monthly give aways and contests. When I market to them, I'll send out mobile offers that if they complete they'd be entered into a drawing to win a prize. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this? Any success? Also, I was thinking about maybe just doing this and targeting only those in my local area. Then I could market to local businesses to send out their coupon/offer, etc. What do you think? |

Bruha, I have started from scratch in building my own SMS list. Yes, a local area would be a good start, you can then expand later. You can also start an affiliate program, that would be really great coz people promote your product/service, they earn and you get what you want ;_0

Makes sense, you have a capture page and if your incentive is strong enough you should be able to capture leads.

Never tried doing so. I have a friend who built a pretty big list and he said it was quite difficult, but I plan to try when I get the chance.

Yes I am quietly building my SMS list and love the fact that it is so much more responsive than any email list I ever had. David |

It really does pay offer as you will be marketing to them some things that are really inline with their interest. There more you get all those that like those interest you will definitely make some money without fail. You can also get some that will promote to your list by offering their product but they will pay you a small amount. |

We tried SMS marketing and had decent results. Didn't happen to me directly but to a close associate of mine: Don't mess with the wrong people and do business only with legitimate providers. You'll get dinged BIG TIME if you don't abide by the SMS marketing rules and regulations so beware. |

Yes, be very familiar with the TCPA if you're in the US. Make sure that you're correctly opting people in. |

Yes it's not only essential that people actually opt in to your SMS marketing funnel, but you have a mechanism in place for them to verify there number. Unless they verify there number then you shouldn't be sending marketing messages to them. David |

What the other guys said - make sure you're doing this legit, especially if you're in the US, and do your research to find out what works the best for your target audience. Contests, giveaways, affiliate programs... Different target auditories respond to different incentives and methods, and the best way of finding out who responds to what is by testing, testing, testing. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm using a Lime cellular reseller, and I've had a chance to go through and make sure I'm good on the regulatory side for the opt ins. What are some incentives you have used to get people to opt in? I'm thinking about doing monthly gift card give aways to local businesses as well as monthly drawings for a larger prize. Eventually, I'd like to have a business sponsor the larger prize in exchange for being promoted to my list. I'm thinking I'll be posting on Facebook, Craigslist and other local sites to get people to opt in. I'll most likely get some flyers made up and post them up around town as well. Any other thoughts are always appreciated. Thanks! |

Good idea on the gift cards. People like gifts, they like receiving them, they like receiving them for free when their own input or obligation towards the giver is very little. But when they do sign up in hopes of getting that free monthly gift card - well, now you've got their number! And that's more valuable than any gift card, if you know how to use it.. Let us know how it goes. P.S. Tailor your on- and offline advertising towards your target audience, and don't try to reach everyone with your campaign. Figure out your potential subscribers! |

I offer this to my clients. It's just an alternative or in addition to any shortcode optin processes as the market place is becoming sophisticated to what shortcodes do/are, having a landing page method to collect optins helps.

We have had some very good success with this list building method by using local offers and monetizing them with local focused CPA offers. We often sell one off promotion to local businesses mainly restaurants, oil change shops, and insurance agents. We have good success with Facebook and Mobile Adwords Hope this helps! |
