I just finished watch Symphony of the Soils on Mercola's site.
"Symphony of the Soil" Extols the Importance and Mystery of Soil
The producers are allowing a free viewing until 10/10.
The movie starts with Soils 101 covering the origins and taxonomy of soils. It makes a very strong argument against commercial or as it has come to be known conventional agriculture. It even shows how conventional agriculture and growing corn for bio fuels can have a devastating effect on the climate and can cause droughts.
Excellent movie for everyone, in fact this is some of what they should really be teaching in schools.

      No a movie about soil.
Without healthy soil, you wouldn't exist.
As my old professor would say, ""Soil is what's under your shoes, dirt is what's on top of your shoes."

Thom, I understand your interest in agriculture, but you really need to watch more movies.

      I do, all the time.
I'm actually a big fan of zombie movies
Horror movies also. In fact House of 1,000 Corpses is one of the few movies I've watched close to a dozen times.
But I really enjoy good scientific, educational, documentaries on nature. Especially when it's about the very foundation of life.
I know I'm a soil geek, but the part about Protozoa, bacteria, fungi, and their relationship to plants alone was worth the watch.

Crop rotation is all that's really needed, give the soil a rest. Now, oh, lets maximize it all with nutrients and cane it to death.

Crop rotation has it's place, but more so for pest control then for soil building. For example crop rotation is a good method for controlling corn root worm when you rotate corn with a crop that the root worm isn't attracted to.
The real key to a healthy soil is in feeding the soil and not the plant. Earthworms, Protozoa, Bacteria, and Fungi populations need to be established and fed. Synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides tend to kill the soil microbes. In addition to creating a "dead soil" they severely limit the carbon sequestration of the soil, causing a negative effect on climate change. Commercial or conventional agriculture has a huge effect on the climate Then there's issues with run off and erosion.

I bow to your extensive knowledge of this. Interestingly, before their were flush toilets they proposed earth toilets. A measured deposit of earth would be put over your deposit. Eventually it would be dumped in your back yard and the soil breaks down your deposits very quickly.

It did not catch on for many, some obvious reasons like smell and inconvenience. How good is human deposits for soil?

There's already fertilizers and compost made from sewage sludge. The problem with them is they contain pretty much anything that went down your drain including heavy metals and toxic chemicals.
As for human waste I have seen "outhouses" that process the waste through a series of troughs. One trough captures the solids and transfers they to a compost area. A proper compost pile will heat up to around 140 F. (thanks to Aerobic Bacteria) which is hot enough to kill most pathogens. It is also virtually an odorless process and much more efficient then anaerobic decomposition (which is far from odorless).
Anyways (I get side tracked easily) the liquid continues down a series of troughs with different substrates in them that cleans the liquid making it usable for watering plants.
Also urine has been used as a fertilizer since ancient times and is making somewhat of a comeback. Notice in this article they mention a toilet that diverts the urine to a holding tank and the solid waste and toilet paper to the back (of the toilet?) for composting.

Exactly, crops are like pitchers. You can't make your best pitcher throw 100 times on 3 days rest with 2 on base and no outs. You are inviting disaster, like losing the NLDS against the Cards, oh woops.

Thanks, Thom. I always rely on your education and background in agriculture to answer my questions. This is one piece of education I might just go pick up on my own, though. That will save you a lot of typing in the long run.

I've been trying to find a free copy of "Why in the World are they Spraying" - but can't find it free. I started a thread on chemtrails and want people to be able to watch that film because it's highly documented and very explanatory -- and I know people who aren't familiar with the issue or think "conspiracy theories" aren't going to pay for it.

AND - um..............You're still watching House of 1,000 Corpses? Now, that's just wrong...on a lot of levels.

I think part of the problem is people think this stuffs to bazaar to be real.
There are many things in the film I linked to that would seem bazaar to someone without a background in that field.

By the way yesterday the EPA approved Enlist Duo to be sprayed on G.E. crops. So now we get to eat not only Glyphosate but also 2-4-D and a whole bunch of other chemicals in Enlist that remain a secret.
By the way 2-4-D was one of the main chemicals in Agent Orange.
And people think the EPA actually protects the environment, what a joke.

The EPA doesn't protect land......or animals. What they do is name something they are protecting to gain authority to close land of to the public, then they sell it to corporations. That land in the NV skirmish last
year was tagged for a Chinese corporation for solar....and that would NOT have protected those turtles. Battle Mt. NV is going through the same crap
now. In OR we recalled a rep for that kind of financial dabbling.

You wouldn't believe how much public land has been sold to Weyerhaeuser. They now own large chunks of WA and OR...and I'm not sure how much elsewhere. At least Weyerhaeuser leaves land open until people start destroying it. EPA shuts down some pretty pristine area before it gets sold off.

Shane - last time I looked for it, it was paid viewing only. I'm sure there's other stuff that's now free that was paid viewing when it came out.

Thom -- I can't believe they approved it. They were flabberghasted when the USDA approved it. I feel some very strong coercion is going on at the top. Either finances or outright death threats. Nobody sane, or even close to it would do this. It makes me feel that I'm living in a cull zone. Most countries are banning GMO altogether, and we're working on killing off everyone here. WTF is going on? Serious. They know the consequences. What the hell are they doing?

It would be nice to see them hold the politicians they vote for accountable.
