Today is the 948th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

To commemorate the event, all Brits have to let a Frenchman shoot them in the eye with an arrow.

Off you go.

This is all well and good (apart from the arrows, that is), but let's not forget that today is also the 35th birthday of the celebrated figure-skater and skating-coach Liina-Grete Lilender, and Many Happy Returns to her.

Thanks for making me go look something up.

Again. (At least you provided a link. This time.)

It was the last (and since they have nukes, the final) time the English lost their independence.

I heard that William publicly called Harold a turd.

This may be apocryphal, I suspect. I heard that he just had (strangely) a bit of an Irish accent, had had a few drinks, and had mistakenly been informed that his opponent was "Harold the third".

Well I heard that William publicly called Harold a turd because he claims Harold broke his word.

(to hand over the crown of England once it became available)

If I remember correctly, according to the history channel, William felt he was entitled to the throne of England and had Harold over for a visit.

He then forced Harold to swear he would do all he could do to help William gain the throne once the present king passed away.

When the time came, Harold claimed the throne for himself, became king and the rest is history.

I'm pretty sure a few of our OT members remember that Battle.

I refuse to let somebody shoot me in my one good eye because then I would be totally blind.

I heard half the nobles of England died that day but the video below says it was 80%.
