Maybe you can get a tip or two on how to get your customers to buy more often or buy more from you or maybe some of this can be applied to marketing online.

Yes, but it can go the other way; Myers stores adopted a new format, with shiny, slippery floor tiles with padded carpet under the clothing, etc. Forces you closer to the clothing, etc.

And the Crown Casino, is a master of corralling, you from the shops and into the casino.

But l like the smiley face one, didn't know that one!

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

    First, thanks for the list.

That list is for newbies. There are so many ways to influence shoppers. Hundreds.
The person who wrote the list wasn't a marketer, or a retailer.

And...it isn't evil. Creating a great shopping experience, and making products appealing, is what retail marketing is.

I don't think it's a secret at all. Most people are just unaware of it.

Wouldn't that make it a secret? Especially, if it's not common knowledge and you have to dig in a specific place to find it.

        That's a good question.

No, a secret is something that is kept private, on purpose....and usually there are safeguards to protect that information.

Most everything about marketing is easily available, to anyone willing to read a marketing book.

And the reality is...almost nobody is looking for this information. Those that do, find it pretty quickly. Some of it is also just using your brain to figure out the motivations involved, and why something is done, the reason it is.

For example, in my retail store, I have multiple vacuum cleaners that look similar, except for color. I'll freely tell someone that the reason they are the color they are, is because the more expensive the product, the more attractive the color.

White is always the least money, and yellow is the next color up. Usually bright red is the most expensive. Of course that is just the color, and many other things are involved.

I had a person in my niche once post on an industry forum, "Claude, why do you hide behind the curtain?" He meant that I didn't divulge what I knew. I said "No, I'm an open book. I try to teach everything I know. I'll even help direct competitors.... And a few will still think there are secrets. There are no secrets. You just won't listen"

If this stuff were a secret, you wouldn't be able to find all of it in hundreds of books, free at your library. It's a secret, in the same way algebra is a secret.

Love the Napolean Dynamite gif... although Uncle Rico is employing an entirely different tactic in that clip than the tactic mentioned in the article.
