Has The Big Bang Theory Run Past Its Time?

Just watched yesterday's Big Bang today.

Is it me, or is the show just not as funny as it used to be?

I understand that the characters have to develop over time (and all have except maybe for Bernie) but that doesn't mean you have to remove the funny from the show.

Sheldon's character has grown so much and that was no more evident than in this episode when he confesses something to Raj. And I think that's great on a dramatic level, something you don't see much on this show.

But this is a comedy and it's just not funny anymore.

The same thing happened to MASH towards the end when Alan Alda took over creative control, more or less, and the show became very serious. But Big Bang isn't supposed to be that kind of show. It's not about war. It's about a bunch of geeks trying to fit into our world.

Scorpion, albeit very new, works better on that level because it's meant to be serious. Because of that, I think it might last longer unless the writers run out of ideas. And that's always possible. But at least I don't have to worry about the show becoming "not funny" because it wasn't meant to be in the first place.

Comedy is tough and few shows truly remained funny from beginning to end. Even All In The Family suffered terribly with the death of Edith. The show was never the same, no matter what anybody says.

Seinfeld was pretty much funny all the way through, even though the finale was terrible.

So what do you think? Is it time to let Big Bang go?

Can you think of any sitcoms that were really funny all the way through their run?

I got excited by the topic of this thread, then realized -- Oh, the TV show! Your analysis makes sense and you touch on the challenges involved in the mechanics of TV series (I wrote one that never got produced, so take whatever I say about it with a grain of salt). I've seen so little of the show, not having a TV, that I can't offer a useful opinion on it.

(as if I've ever offered a "useful" opinion on anything...)

It hasn't quite jumped the shark yet, but I expect it will sometime this season. I say this with a heavy heart. I fear this season will be overrun with income equality as Penny starts bringing in the coin. Sheldon becoming more human is not good for the show. Ugh.

The show will jump the shark when Sheldon offers Penny sincere advice on how to handle money-related relationship issues with Leonard.

Sheldon has grown? I have seen some early and later ones, and didn't really see any growth. The show goes WAY too far, as far as I am concerned, but that is probably what makes it funny enough to enough people that it has been on so long. ALL have like a peter pan type syndrome. Only ONE, leonard as I recall, is not bogged down by his parents. Sheldon thinks he is LITERALLY(And YES, I am using the word right here) God's gift to mankind! He believes he is infallible and that the entire planet hinges on his every word.

I could say more about that, but you get the idea. They LOVE the idea of LARP and are INTENSLY FANATICAL, in the deepest meaning of the word, about comics and any tangible item relating to comics or scifi/scifantasy/fantasy. They live together, except for one that lives with his horrible mother, even though they really don't get along that well. And that is only the SURFACE!

THINK ABOUT IT! They have OVERDONE all of the above, and are starting to REALLY have trouble trying to find new ways to ridicule it. That IS what most of the shows are about, RIDICULE! They have ALL had some relationships, and they played the ridicule angle THERE as well. In a sense, they make all the watchers vicarious BULLIES.

I DID like the one where Sheldon's "arch rival" and Sheldon played "practical" jokes on one another. Sheldon's rival loaded sheldon's office with helium, while he was on the phone patched through to a radio interview he was on, and then played the radio broadcast In the company cafeteria so he and sheldon's other coworkers could ridicule it. Sheldon then setup that type of liquid used to create foam installation in the roof of the other guys office so it would shower him when he entered the center of the room, and then played a tape to take credit and gloat. YEAH, I know that is an old one, but it stands out.

With all due respect, HIMYM was pretty solid till the the end. If they could learn how to develop the characters, like a dramatic exit or a baby on the way tropes then somehow this can help the ho-hum mediocre comedy. Even Penny became boring with her having a job. When you think they have progressed, they did not.

I think one of the biggest problems with the show is that it has almost completely done away with all the supporting characters. Where's Kripke and Winkle? Hell, where are Leonard and Sheldon's mothers? The whole show has become about the 7 of them. It's like the outside world has ceased to exist.

Sheldon has always been the whole show but Howard is vastly underrated. In fact, he's probably the most complex character of the lot.

They need to get back to the science and what made this show so funny to begin with.

BBT has been favorite for me since the first time I saw it and it remains so. The characters have grown up somewhat but as long as they show new episodes I'll be there watching. The change to Monday night threw me and I missed this week because I forgot it was on!

I think the producers have done a masterful job through the years by adding supporting characters that not only mesh well into the group but also have their own distinct personalities. (Bernadette, Amy, Lucy, etc).

Part of the ridicule is that the guys are so out of it that the have NO hope of getting any woman to go out with them. Frankly, I think they have had about 4 recurring characters go out with them. Compared to the other three, at least on the show, I think the main character, penny, is a knockout! I think they ALL look better in real life. Of course, the other 3 are supposed to be like the guys. One is a wannabe nymphomaniac. She is crass, etc.... One sounds like howards mother and has an attitude to match. One seduces guys, which isn't too hard, since they have similar problems, so she can have sex once every three years! And there is penny who seems to be a nice normal girl that is just trying to get by and be friendly. SURE she ridicules the guys, but WHO DOESN'T!?

It's not very popular over here, but I watched a couple of episodes. (I don't know which series they were from).

I thought it was actually pretty well-written and potentially very entertaining. There were certainly some very funny and quite clever lines. But the "canned laughter" that had been added on, in post-production, made it (for me) unbearably artificial and unpleasant, and I just couldn't stand to watch a third episode, after sitting through two episodes of that. A shame.

Exactly this. I made it through about one and a half episodes. There are some sharp and funny lines, but it's probably the effect of the canned laughter that, to me, makes the show feel like a bunch of one-liners strung together, rather than a complete narrative.

I've seen more than one comment about the "canned laughter" in US tv shows on this forum. Before that, I had just assumed that was how tv is everywhere. I think Americans put up with it because we're so used to it that we don't really even notice it. I would think that if you watch humor without it in your country, then an American show with it, it has to be severely annoying.

Watching the show is kinda like a trip home to me, too. I see many of my university pals, and some of my present scientist associates in the characters. I love it and probably always will.

Of course the show is evolving. Some episodes are more serious but they have to be for character development. Some are still just slapstick hilarious. I've never been much of a television watcher but I always have a fav sitcom that I tune in to. Used to like That 70's Show, but the characters grew up. Not much you can do about that one. You can't keep them in high school forever. Two and a Half Men was a fav of mine until they brought in Charlie's daughter. She's just kind of gross to me and ruined the show for me completely.

Kay - I don't own a TV. I watch episodes on CBS online. Just Google "watch big bang theory" and choose the cbs link - it's always one of the top two choices. There's usually a few days delay to see the latest episode, but it's there if you miss one.

Sal, I don't mind the show evolving. In fact, it has to or it becomes dull from doing the same thing all the time. But the problem is the writing. The jokes just aren't as funny as they used to be.

A recent episode had a part that was like the Big Bang of old when they were discussing creating the car that went "Back To The Future" and all the paradoxes it would create. That was one of the funniest scenes in a long time, but they are few and far between. The writers are either getting lazy or running out of ideas, which is understandable after this many years, That's why all TV shows eventually go off the air. There's just nothing left to do that's worth doing.

I don't know if Big Bang has reached that point yet. I still enjoy watching the show because I love the characters. That will never change.

But for the most part, the funny just isn't there like it used to be.

          At least not for me.

I understand your point, Steve. I guess that, for me, it hasn't reached that level yet. I found the episode with Howard and the baseball really hilarious. In fact, it seems that not much has changed with him other than there's a wife that takes the place of his mother. I think that was done brilliantly. In this last episode Sheldon showed more of his old self than in any other recent episode, too.

As far as the side characters - they never were full time so I'm sure Mom's and others will be back on periodically. I think what we need to see now that all of the guys are paired off is more scenes where they are interacting together without the wives, like they did in the recent episode that they got together to brainstorm and the girls went to Vegas. That really was a good episode. It seems more difficult to write original humor for couples than for scientists.

I think that here in America we are just accustomed to hearing the laugh track. I honestly very rarely notice it when I'm watching a show.

I have watched shows both with and without laugh tracks, and there are things that I like about both.

For instance I recently watched the MASH series again - this time without laugh tracks, and it made it feel like a more sophisticated funny. Like the writers expected you to know when to laugh.

However the show with the laugh track makes it feel more like you're watching it with other people. - Back when there were fewer TV channels, you knew that you were watching certain funny shows live with millions of other viewers. There's something attractive about watching a show live - and knowing that others are laughing when you are laughing. It gives the show a sense of community.

Lately I've been watching Sherlock - the BBC version of the series, and there's no way I could watch it now if canned laughter were added to it. It can be extremely funny - but I can see why people are not attracted to the canned laughter.

Steve, Gary nailed it in his post. We find laughter contagious, probably because shared, group laughter helps to bond a society. It's hard-wired into us.

Actually, I have no problem with studio-audience laughter, even though I suspect much of it is manipulated. But when it's added in post-production, it feels to me like the management doesn't have enough faith in the comic potential of the script, or the ability of the cast.

Shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Larry Sanders (and MASH in the UK) prove that a laughter track is unnecessary when the material and acting is good enough. Leaving it off also shows a respect for the intelligence of the viewers.

Yeah, it doesn't work that way with me! Some medicines, even ones considered POWERFUL, simply DON'T work on me, or do the reverse. The same is true of many other things as well. For chemicals, maybe 80% of those that are considered to absolutely WORK on people work on me. My perception of some things, sound, pain, etc..., is skewed. Things that may put others out of commission, I may hardly notice. Other things that don't bother others are painful to me.

As for laughter? I don't laugh because others are.

That's unsee - not unhear. Actually, after cramming a bobby pin through my right ear and losing that eardrum at 15 months old, and considering I'm old enough that the rest of it could start going bad, especially since I am a "crank that volume" music fan -- I really should be grateful to hear anything, even hokey laugh tracks.

As far as BBT - when masses of people stop watching it is when it will have run past it's time.

I missed it this week putting a Disney Frozen Toddler bed together upstairs for the kid.

Didn't miss it or look online to watch it after the fact.. So I guess for me it's expendable content. My wife though loves it and was downstairs watching while I'm assembling a canopy heh..

The BBT still ranks as one of my favorite shows on TV to watch. While I still think it's funny and well-written, I think it's gone down slightly. But I don't think it's run past it's time. In fact, I hope that show goes on for another 5 seasons. Yeah, I like it A LOT.

Ha! I honestly thought this thread was going to be about the actual Big Bang Theory....not the TV show.

I thought the same thing and got excited about what it was going to be! I'd already Googled it to find out was revolutionary breakthrough was made. My hands were shaking, coffee almost spilling from my cup. The newly observed dark matter in the sun? New Higgs Boson particle discoveries?! Then, I found out it was just the TV show.

        I'm a dunce myself.

Depends on your sense of humor. I like the show because I get their nerdy, geeky humor, with a dearth of references to Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Comic book heros & villians, string theory, etc. I find it hilarious.

Some of my friends who don't get that kind of humor, don't find the show that funny. My ex-girlfriend would watch it with me and say, "I don't get it."

It's a show that's made a very specific audience. If you're part of that audience, then you'll like the show.

If you have any interest, you can go to CBS's website and catch an episode and see if it floats your boat:

I think the Big Bang literally means, the big bang. Like sexually. It was like a banging session.
