Are movie trailers revealing too much?

For some time now, it seems that movie trailers are more and more revealing. I was looking at some trailers recently and there seems to be some very important moments being revealed in them.

First time I actually thought of this was with one of the Pacific Rim trailers when it showed that robot using the boat as a weapon...I was thinking to myself "How awesome that would have been if I didn't already know it was going to happen".

I think from now on, I'm just going to read a short description of a movie and just go see it or not based on that and/or reviews.

Thoughts ?

Well if a trailer doesn't have exciting on the edge of your seat action that entices people to go and see the movie, what would be the point in even having a trailer at all!

Yeah most producers and directors nowadays don't know the art of making a trailer that will make the movie seem incredible without gving away too much.

I remember ten years back when Attack of the Clones was released (Star Wars Episode II) they made an incredible trailer but kept key action scenes out, such as the Yoda/Dooku light saber duel, so for the people who watched the movie it came as a total stunner.

    That's how you do it.

Yeah that was the only good thing about that entire 'movie'.

Which is probably why it was shown in the trailer.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I'm pretty sure that many movies owe whatever box office success they've attained to the scenes featured in their trailers. These clips are passed around globally on the internet and can make or break a movie. Unfortunately, too often they're the only worthwhile bits of the film.

And if a studio has splashed out half the movie's budget on one or two set-pieces, there's no way they're going to be left out of any trailer.

And that's another problem, they've become so money hungry or something that they need to put the best scenes in the trailer in order to get people to come, then you see the movie and it turns out it's crap.

Maybe I'm just used to those "mysterious" type trailers, that make you curios instead of revealing 50% or more of the story and shots from the best moments in the film.

Yep. I recall Alan Bechtold using that exact example at the System Seminar back in 2006. "Give em' your best stuff" to get them to get them to take an appropriate action.

I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Way too much money gets spent on making movies, so they have to do what they can to get people in the seats. Movies are competing with the internet, cable, streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu. It makes perfect sense, you don't put out a boring ass posters and expect people to turn out like the old days. People have t.v's and computers nowadays
