Ive used camtasia studio and snagit. I liked both of them, although there are many other options too

Have you tried using JING? Jing allows you to save screen caps on its servers and converts them so it is easy to email the information to someone else. Or have you tried Sound Flower? Sound flower allows you to redirected the audio output. instead of the audio going out of your speakers you can redirected to the sound flower application. That way when you capture the screen you also capture the audio as well.

About a year and a half ago I needed to record some streaming video training courses.

I was subscribed to a membership site and we were promised the training videos would be available as BOTH streaming AND downloads.
The site admin reneged. Starting about half way through the training series, they went with streaming video only.
I owned Snagit, Camtasia, Camtasia Studio, 1AVcapture, Hypercam and a few others.
I had 3 different computers, all with different audio components and/or drivers.
I could never get both video AND audio to work on any of my 3 systems.
(I've worked in IT for over 20 years so it is not like I'm some noob).

So I began my quest for a DEPENDABLE program that could record and capture streaming videos.For about 2 months I DEMO'd and tested several programs.
The 1AVcapture almost worked. Their tech support really tried to help get things working.
But it still had some audio issues.

I finally stumbled across a program called LITECAM by innoheim.com.
It was just $39.99 and worked flawlessly on all 3 of my computers.
Innoheim also has a program with a better features set called CAMVERCE, that is more like CAMTASIA, as far as a features go.

I believe it's the CODEC that innoheim uses that made the difference.
It is called iSCC, which stands for:inno Screen Capture Codec(iSCC).
According to their website it is: -- the most optimized codec for screen recording. This codec offers you a higher compression and faster speed compared to any other codecs even the most popular one, TechSmith Screen Capture Codec(TSCC). iSCC can be used not only with liteCam and CamVerce but also with screen recording software(AVI file type) from other companies such as Camtasia Studio, CamStudio, HyperCam and etc.

They offer it separately for about $15.00 the last time I checked.
Or it comes included with either LITECAM or CAMVERCE.

So save yourself a lot of time and effort and frustration.

I like Camtasia and Snagit, "when they work". But when they do not work, it is frustrating to say the least.

I have bought licenses of LITECAM for all 3 of my computers:
A desktop, a netbook and a laptop.
I works flawlessly on all three.
The video is clear and the audio is perfect.

Screen recorders record the system audio. If you turn the system audio off it has nothing to record.

You can turn off the external speaker so the computer doesn't make audible sound while leaving the system audio settings up.

I use Jing for simple screen/video capture. Seems to work for me but I don't do anything too fancy.

You can turn off the external speakers, as suggested, or just plug in headphones and turn the volume down on those. It will still capture the audio.

I realize this is an older thread, but in case others are interested, I've tried 7 or 8 of the free/cheap screen capture programs and by far the best and most powerful is the free version of ActivePresenter. It also includes a pretty good video editor, a feature missing in virtually all the other free/cheap alternatives.
