(BTW he's not gone. He is 78 and has Alzheimer's. He has been in fulltime care since June. This explains the angle of the song.)

Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman - YouTube
He's one of the few older country stars that I've always really enjoyed listening to. This song here, "Wichita Lineman", was written by the great songwriter Jimmy Webb, who had multiple hits back in the 1960's and 70's.

My wife and I had the privilege of seeing Glen play at Alice Cooper's Christmas Pudding in 2004. He only performed two songs, which was standard for most acts that night. He did a beautiful version of "Little Drummer Boy" and also performed "Rhinestone Cowboy".

I grew up listening to Glen Campbell, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. We had a big console record player from Sears. If the record skipped, you taped a dime at the end of the tonearm. If it kept skipping, you moved to pennies, nickels, and quarters.

He has had a remarkable life in the music business, and is an accomplished guitarist. Before (and during) his solo career, he was a highly sought-after studio musician and played on numerous pop hits of the period, like songs from The Monkeys, Nancy Sinatra, Merle Haggard, and others I can't remember. He was also a regular with the Beach Boys. I think he did a gig as a stand-in for Brian Wilson at one point.

I always liked his cover of this song better than the original:

I didn't even know he was dead. I remember a few of his songs, but not a fan. Still - surprising to see this thread not having realized he was gone.

      Somebody mentioned "The Beach Boys":

Glen Campbell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"From December 1964 to early March 1965, Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian Wilson.[8] He also played guitar on the group's Pet Sounds album, among other recordings. On tour, he played bass guitar and sang falsetto harmonies."

I saw Campbell a while back on one of the talk shows. He was incoherent - didn't know where he was - his wife had to guide him through the show but he was able to sing that song.

It saddened me that his wife and that show would subject him to that. It seemed wrong somehow to me.

That does seem wrong. That's probably about the time she made the difficult decision to get him full, professional care.

When I Googled for more information, a lot of the article headlines were along the lines of "Glenn Campbell's Wife Defends her decision..." I read part of one article where she explained that he his condition was such that he could drink anything by mistake, from dish soap to olive oil... It was
dangerous and too easy for him to hurt himself...

Sad how often family causes problems in a case like this - his daughter wants him out of the care facility. Says she will take care of him....but wasn't taking care of him before the care facility.

He's been married to his wife for 30 years - time for daughter to get over the stepmother syndrome. She lives a thousand miles away so his wife is not interested in moving him there for obvious reasons.

No care giver should have to defend their reasons for needing help caring for an Alzheimer's patient.

Touching and haunting describes it perfectly. This impacted me in more ways than one.

PS After watching Glen's stuff for an hour now in remembrance after you posed this, I ran into some Karen Carpenter memories. Now it's going to be hard to get to sleep.

    @ Kay

That does not sound good on the daughter's part as she may not know what he is
like on a daily basis now. The night time escapes that some do, the fact that he might
eat or drink something poisonous, etc. etc. .....

If the daughter is the one who toured with Glen, I could see her having a hard time
dealing with the fact that he needs a facility - denial.

You're right - there should be no argument about providing the needed care.

If the daughter is the one who toured with Glen
More than one daughter toured with him over the years - he had 8 kids - 4 marriages...only the 4th marriage lasted.

Glen Campbell's Family Struggle Over Medical Care | Rolling Stone

It sounds like one of the "old family vs new family" arguments that never ends but I expect his wife of 31 years has the final say on what happens - as she should.

When the battle is about "legacy" - that usually means 'money' to my mind.
