All I can say is WOW! It's true that you never know if you have a tomorrow. It's equally true that you must spend time with loved ones, and MAKE THE EFFORT to do so. I need a hankie too.

After I graduated college, I landed an interview that my mother was extremely excited about. She wanted to take me to get "an early birthday present" - a special suit for the interview. We stopped to have pie and coffee afterward.

I can't remember what exactly she said. It really doesn't matter. I remember what she was saying. She was afraid I would feel less of her because she had never been to college. I was flaberghasted.

This was the woman who kept me alive when the doctors said I wouldn't make it to high school. She was the one who taught me to use my imagination - how to create. She taught me to be a decent person. She taught me how to entertain and that fun wasn't irrelevant but a very important part of life - just as learning was. She put up a fit for me at the library when they said I was too young to check out the type of books I wanted so that I could learn what I wanted to. She made me always feel safe and loved.

And that's what I told her that day. And how thankful I was to have her. And I told her that being half the woman she was would be an achievement that I could only aspire to.

It was the last time I saw her alive.

Beautiful story, Sal...and sad that it was your last conversation but at least you did say it all.

Sal, it's good you were able to do that with your mother.

Without that little side jog for pie and coffee, it would have been me, too, Steve. I had no idea she was feeling insecure - and nobody knew she was terminally ill. She had gotten ready for her bridge club ladies and the first one arrived and she told her "I think I'm having a heart attack, can you take me to the hospital". That was it. Boom Here today, gone the next.

I came very, very, scarily close to never having told her how much I appreciated and loved her. We said "I love you" now and again - but we never really pointed out all the great things each other actually were to each other.

On my father's 90th birthday (where I was one of the "youngsters" of the crowd), his wife's sister with alzheimers fell in the bathroom and nobody could get into the stall to get her or to see if she was hurt. I took my shoes off and grabbed the top of the door and swung myself over the door and into the stall. People there went crazy a woman of my age could do such a thing.

When all of it was over and the paramedics had left people were gathering around making comments about my feat. With everyone listening to what I had to say, I was able to give my father the credit for raising me with a value for physical health and how much I appreciated his teachings. Then he and I took the dance floor. It was awesome and a memory I know will serve him to understand that I don't just love him - but actually appreciate the time and effort he took to teach me something that I cherish.

Sometimes "I love you" isn't really what needs to be said. Very often people KNOW that you love them.

I think what is most important is to let them know what they did that changed your life and made the most important difference to you.
