Search function FIXED!! :)

Just thought I'd pass on the good news that the new owners have fixed the search function. Alaister mentioned it in another thread in the Main Discussion Forum (a thread about WSOs, actually), so thought some of you down here in the "basement" (who rarely venture upstairs) might be happy to hear this!

  • I know this has been a long ongoing issue. Thank you for everyone's patience.
Let me know if anyone is still encountering any issues with the search.

It's not fixed....my "find all posts by user" function only goes back to Aug. 2014... Not even close to being fixed!

    • That's weird. Let Alaister know. When I checked mine and a few other random members, everything appeared to be up to date, showing posts from today on back.

At least yours goes back to 2009 even though you joined in 2007.

    • At least it's working for recent posts. That's welcome progress!

Sure it's welcome, but unfortunately it's very little progress, me thinks. The percentage of posts it's returning of Alexa's for me is .01752435002% ---> slightly less than 2%.

    • Thanks for the feedback. We're looking deeper into the issues. It seems as thought more results are appearing however they are not complete.

Apologies for the lack of communication in regards to this. We will be improving this moving forward and keep everyone updated.
  • Mine goes back to page 26. Interesting.

You should point that out to Alaister. That kind of oddity can be very useful in figuring out what's borked and where.

    • Mine goes back 26 pages as well. Don goes back 25 pages. Alaister - sorry, no results found. That Alaister guy is covering his tracks!
    • Banned
Yeah, I have communicated by PM with Alaister and sent him the actual searches showing the number of pages returned. He told me they will continue to work on it and he apologized the frustration.

When I was doing the research earlier Alaister's search was returning results from 2009 just like Cali's.

      Cheers

  • When I check Alaister's, I get 27 pages. So, not as fixed as it might be...
    • [2] replies
    • Thanks for pointing this out. All this information helps us with putting the puzzle together and better understanding what's causing the issue.

      Thank you
    • Tried it again after your comment and I got 27 pages this time. And he thought he could hide from us!
  • Don,

When I checked using the links in your other post, I got no results. When I checked using the menu option under the same members' names, I got the post histories. Maybe another clue?

Good call....yeah, those links are dead for me now as well. I did not use the insert link function when I posted them either.

Testing Dennis again...this time with the insert link button.

      http://www.warriorforum.com/search.p...rchid=28128216

      And it seems to work...

Do you remember if those links go dead after a new post is added by the user? I guess we will find out something when Dennis makes another post.

  • Don,

Worked from the menu and not from the link. Wonder what's up with that?

Does that most recent link I posted work for you? Or is that the one to which you just reffered?
  • Banned
As far as page count's goes --> Alexa's only goes back 19 pages.
  • Don,

That's the one I meant. The new one doesn't work for me either, from the post. Still works from the menu under his name, though.

Weird...it work's for me, even in a new browser I just opened. This is a very strange issue indeed. Holy smokes....
  • Banned
As far as 2009 goes I just checked Suzanne's "thanked posts" and while almost 5000 results are returned the search does not return results beyond 2009.
  • I get the same results in Explorer that I got in Firefox. Works from the menu, doesn't from the link.

    Paul
  • The Thanks option wasn't added until, if memory serves, September of 2008. It wasn't used a lot early on, so that may be all the results there are to show.

Edited to add: I'm wrong. It was August of 2008.

And another edit: Hmmm. It shows 4300 of mine, which is less than the profile shows. But, the difference would be about the number of admin-related posts of mine that got deleted when Allen went on a clean-up spree of those once.

That might be the reason for the discrepancy, if the system doesn't remove thanks for deleted posts over X days old.

These symptoms are almost a real mystery... I just logged out, cleared my browser data, reopened my browser, logged back in and that link is still working for me even in Chrome.

Does that url look like this to you? I suppose it must...

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128216
What does the url look like when you access the results from the menu?

It returns this for me from the menu:

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128524
  • Same URL each time. I checked that early on, in case it was a syntax issue.

BTW, copying and pasting that in didn't work either. Seems only to work from the menu.
  • Banned
Can you copy and paste either of those I just posted in the code boxes and get to the results?
  • Ooops. Wrong.

    From the menu, it's:
    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?do=finduser&u=491803
It redirects to that same link each time, which is why I didn't notice it.
  • Banned
What? I am not getting redirects either way....I am getting what I posted in the most recent code boxes.
  • If you hover over the menu option, you can see the actual link at the bottom of the browser if you have that enabled. Or just do that and "Copy Link Location."
  • Banned
I got you now, I was missing that quick redirect. This is what I am seeing from the menu for Dennis which I am sure is what you are seeing.

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?do=finduser&u=70702
  • 70702 is Dennis' user number.

    Ahhhhh... DOH!

Maybe searchid is a user-specific thing? That would explain why those links work for you and not me (or probably anyone else).

    Except, I don't think they're supposed to be user-specific.

Nah, I don't think so either. I have seen (clicked on) and posted search strings to the past and they have worked fine. Post one of yours in the format I did and let me see if I can get to it.
  • Banned
    These still don't work?

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128524

    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128216
    How about Cali?

    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.p...rchid=28128614

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128614
  • Nope. And I don't think they will. That appears to be a settings issue, not an artifact of any problem with the new search function.
  • Code:

Yep, user specific at this point.

Try this general search --> I know these used to work in the past. This is search for "photos" forum wide.

    Code:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/search.php?searchid=28128666
It may not work for you and it used to work. I think the URL now is much different than what the search string used to be.
  • Try this one. Let's see if a different type of search works:

I beat you to it in my post right before yours....yeah, it works.
  • Both had the same idea. And yes, that one worked.

Typing at the same time and thinking the same way now...

So the format supposedly can work, but for some reason it's not on the find post by user function --> at least between you and I and most likely others.
  • I suspect it's limited by the type of search. I don't recall that ever being the case before, but I might not have seen this type of search posted.

As far as that 24, 25, 26 page thing goes it's really sporadic.

The Niche man is showing 39 pages...

It seems like some sort of multiple copy, possibly cache, never "indexing" everything type of issue.

  • I theorized months ago that a big chunk of the search problems was that it was looking at two copies of the database, and somehow alternating between them.

It makes sense, but I don't know enough about the system to be sure that's it.
    • [1] reply

Yeah, me either. It seems no matter how many copies they have for quite sometime they have not been returning the older posts for the majority of the users...many, many months in my case, and I have been checking virtually every day for months.

Whatever is happening it appears that none of the DB copies have complete results. I don't have any fancy or complex DB installs or disk arrays (and never have had) so it's beyond me as well.

Re: Page count --> Except the person that has the most posts on the forum only returns 19 pages. So strange. I have checked out quite a few users and several have had 39 pages but that's as high as I have seen. I am not even sure if it tells us much other than we have not seen over 39 pages returned on these types of searches.

Unfortunately, we aren't making a great deal of headway here...
  • The first two links don't work. You could get a working link by copying it from the menu.

It does seem to be in the 24-27 and 35-39 range. Pretty much as Cali mentioned.

I'm happy with the improvement ... works for recent results, which is what I am mostly interested in anyway. Doesn't pick up everything, but it's rare that I would go past a few hundred posts to look for something.
