I'm on Amazon here shopping for either an Xbox One or PS4. A present for my 14 year-old daughter this Christmas. Can anyone who's played both weigh in and give me advice on which one you think is better?

Thanks!

Not to criticize you, but there are plenty of in-depth reviews from experienced players of both consoles on YouTube.

I do know that Xbox One got a price drop recently.

There is not much between them really...
They both have exclusive game titles such as Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Killer Instinct and Ryse: Son of Rome for XB1
Xbox has live PS4 has PS Plus, you can check out the differences here:
Xbox Live Gold versus PS Plus: which is the best value? | VG247

Other than that you will have to dig into nerd specs like who has the best graphics card, fastest processor etc. i'm sure you don't really care...

If you held a gun to my head i would go for XBox One, i think there is a special on at the moment for $350.....

    Good luck....

I haven't tried EITHER, and don't play such things, but the following review says XBOX ONE is more rounded but even THEY say that you should decide for yourself:

Xbox One vs PS4 - Opinion - Trusted Reviews

Bear in mind that a game your daughter likes may not be available for whichever you chose. If it were me, the FIRST thing I would do, if I were you, is determine what she is interested in, and plays, and make sure it is available. It PROBABLY will be, but if, it is only available for one, this will make your decision easier, and her enjoyment better.

You probably should do that ANYWAY, since you will want to get a game she likesand doesn't have as well as the peripherals to get it working well.

Just an unbiased and general opinion.

When it comes to quality and game selection,
you could make the case for either one. But for me:

XBox One, because the online community:
    1. Is far more skilled in most games;
    2. Has far more mature players.

Not even a contest in any way, shape, or form.

(FYI I have both, and play mostly fighting games i.e. USF4/UMvC3/KOF/T6, etc.)

BTW the European price, according to that review, is the SAME for both consoles. They MAY have lowered the price, but the review seems to indicate that they simply removed an item(Kinect, which is a peripheral to allow gesture control) from the base package, so the two consoles sell for the same price. AGAIN, games may be more expensive for one than the other. The review is equal enough that the graphics and sound are likely comparable.

It depends on what she wants. It comes down to individual tastes.

If she hasn't expressed an interest in gaming, then WiiU might be the best choice as it's aimed toward the casual public.

For anything else. Best is PC gaming. With Steam, you can get a ton of AAA titles for cheap. You get a lot of free goodies if your willing to tinker a bit. Skyrim is a much better game with mods.

In any case, consoles are underpowered. They don't come anywhere close to PC graphics and they don't nearly have the same diversity in games.

Again, I don't play games, but I think Wii is likely a bad choice. Look here:

PS4 vs. Xbox One vs. Wii U Comparison Chart - Xbox One Wiki Guide - IGN

It seems the Wii is inferior to the xone in almost every respect. Quantity isn't equivalent to quality.

As for PC capabilities, integrated cards TEND to be FAR AND AWAY above the old basic plug in cards. Historically MOST plugin cards have been LOWER quality. So to call integrated "piece of crap" is unfair. There ARE graphics cards that can cost as much as a midrange computer, and may even be REQUIRED for a given game, but that tends to be due to a lot of processing, sprite and primitive capability. Basically, they can have the computer deal with a large object, like a background, as a complete object without dealing with every little pixel, and have the GC worry about THAT.

MOST consumer CPUs used to have TWO paths! One was getting faster for general low level use for most consumers, and one was getting faster for general multitasking higher level use for servers. TODAY, for example, the first path may have less, and slower cache, fewer cores, and maybe a slower speed. By doing this, they can meet the demand from one sector, and provide a similar, but better product for another sector at a higher cost. TODAY, it has maybe FIVE paths. TWO are as I described, one is kind of a tossup, and there is not a definite direction yet. The other two started out at FAR SLOWER speeds! WHY? It is easier to integrate in small devices, and uses less power.

So if you DO go the PC route, I would recommend, if it is intel, that you get at least an I5, and the highest Ghz speed you can. The I7 IS better, but may be more expensive. I'm sure such a high end system from a reputable company will have a good graphics capability built in. HECK, I haven't seen one yet that didn't. They have to be able to handle the size of screens a person will generally use today. The screens and resulutions available on the first VGA cards look like cheap TOYS now! Even the ATOM processor Systems I have seen today can work with todays needs there. ATOM is one of the newer LOW SPEED processors though, so that will generally NOT be good for gaming.

      Comparison charts are for marketers.

The Wii U has a lot of great games that you cannot get anywhere else.
Also, it's a lot better for casual gamers and parties.

As mentioned above, it really comes down to what the recipient wants?

Is the Xbox One still requiring the camera and microphone to be passively on at all times? Because if it is, that's so creepy I wouldn't even care about any other factors.

They NOW have the option to NOT get the Kinect. Based on what THAT does, and cost/price, that may be the ONLY thing that has a camera, and likely a mike. SURPRISE!!!!!! Wikipedia mentions a MIKE and camera ONLY with the Kinect component. So it appears that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to have it actually ON at all times, since it must be able to operate without it.

One CAVEAT! In a way, you could argue that almost ALL consumer devices today, with a camera and/or mike demand that they be PASSIVELY on. Meaning that, though they may not be active and currently powered, they could be with no desire on your part, and perhaps no action. Some viruses and other software has been known to do that on PCs, and phones, for example.

And YEAH, I don't doubt Microsoft doing ANYTHING.

I said as much in my FIRST response. The FIRST question is the desires of the daughter!

Yeah, I agree. I would never ever buy a WiiU. But she's a young girl.

I was viewing her merely as an individual, and so I said her likes/dislikes/etc... should be the first consideration. You are right though. She is a young girl. Feminists can say what they want, but many, maybe MOST, girls have VERY different tastes and desires, and I can do little more than approximate possibilities and notice it. So I wouldn't pretend to even try to pick criteria for something they, as a group, would like.

Luckily, if I had such a job, I would have survey groups to judge key milestones. And I was actually in one for American express, when they planned what the Optima would look like. Outside of the centurian, there were few ideas they had. They weren't sure of color, placement, or background design. THEY had more experience than I do here,

HECK, I wonder how many NERF REBELLEs are sold. It is a concept that BOYS have traditionally liked more, but the name, color, logo, and target market is certainly targeted at GIRLS!

No, that ended a very long time ago.
In fact, they now have the most transparent policy in the industry.

I was going to stay out this thread but I will make a suggestion. Purchase the console that most of her friends game on...this way when she has the same games she will be able to game online with her friends.

Technically speaking, the PS4 is graphically a bit more powerful than the Xbox One, but they are both very good systems. Graphical power is not the only thing to consider when purchasing a system because it comes down to the programmers being able to utilize the full capabilities of the system, the exclusive titles that are offered on the system, the system your friends are gaming on, the non-gaming features you want, the online communities and features, and even the free games offered on paid subscriptions.

As mentioned earlier you don't have to have the Xbox Kinect sensor watching or listening to you at all times if you purchase a rig with the sensor. The best thing to do IMO is find out what system most of her friends are gaming on and go with that one. It's not absolutely mandatory though...as she will make friends online if you allow her to game online.

While I own an Xbox 360 and almost three hundred Xbox 360 games I will *probably* purchase a PS4 when I buy a new system, but I will cross that bridge when the time comes. If the Xbox One was backwards compatible I would have purchased it already, but it's not, so I don't need to stay loyal to the brand.

Many of the folks that I game with on the 360 have purchased the PS4, and some other friends of mine have switched to a PS4 after originally purchasing the One. Not many have switched from the PS4 to the One. Worldwide the PS4 is selling a ton of units compared to the One. FWIW, total sales for the last generation PS3 and Xbox 360 are almost a dead heat at this point in the product life cycle. The Xbox 360 had a technical edge over the PS3 when they were released, but that's not the case with the One and the PS4.

I am in the minority of users that actually use the Kinect sensor fairly often as I own several games that my nieces and nephews and I play that we have a lot of fun with. I also use some of the sports and action titles to get in a little exercise...for me it's much more fun than riding the stationary exercise bike. Table tennis, Tennis, Crashed Ice, Boxing etc. etc. The Kinect system that comes with the One is very good.

Anyway, I am no brand fanboy, and as an electronic technician for many years I have closely studied the hardware of both units, but in the end it comes down to what games you are going to play...and often times that means what games your friends are playing and on what system. Tons of gamers don't play by themselves or local multiplayer anymore, they play online with and against friends and you need the same console as your friends to be able to do that.

For instance when I had time to game a lot of hours several years ago I racked up 3000 Need For Speed wins against racers from around the world....seriously great fun but you need to have the games you like to play, and usually that means you are playing on the same rig that your friends and gaming friends are playing.

Both consoles provide a lot of entertainment and you can't really go wrong with either one. In-fact they really are entertainment systems that can deliver much more than just game play.

I also agree with what was mentioned above, while I would not consider a Wii for myself, it could be considered for less serious, younger and/or less experienced gamers. In-fact I have a few young relatives, both boys and girls, that have a lot of fun with the Wii. I have seen some serious dance parties going on, put it that way.

One last note --> I would not seriously consider the advice of people that are not gamers. I grew up gaming and owned my first console in the late 70's, moved on to the Atari 5200 (3), Sega Genesis (2), Nintendo (3), Super Nintendo (2), Nintinedo 64 (1), Playstation 1 (3) and Xbox 360 (1) and I also gamed for a few years on my computers.

Yeah, I know, that's a lot of systems and a lot game playing, and I'm not anywhere near a super hard-core gamer!

Best of luck...I am guessing she will be happy with whatever system you decide on.

    Cheers

    -don

Xbox One would be the best choice because it is more then just a gaming console. I also believe that it is more user friendly than PS4. I have owned the PS3 and it just collected dust. I now own a Xbox One and love it.

    Hey Gang!

I can't thank you all enough for so many helpful responses. My reply here will be terribly lame in comparison, but know that I appreciate the time and effort you put in.

I ordered the Wii U Premium Pack. The catalogue of games, and the fun console itself, just seems more her kind of thing. I didn't even know about it until it was mentioned here! I stick to PC gaming myself (small bit of xbox). No idea how the new Wii slipped through my radar.

    Thanks again folks!
