13" or 15" inch Macbook Pro for making money online?

Ok so I am having the hardest time deciding which one to get for making money online. 13 inch is dual core, 256gb, iris graphics. 15 inch is quad core, 256gb, iris pro graphics. I was curious if you have a Macbook Pro which size do you have and why? Any advice is appreciated. T

    I just bought a 13 inch Macbook Pro retina display with 256gb of storage and 8gb of ram. It runs amazingly well and works perfect for anything I do in my business. Edit video, photos, website design, etc...

    I'd go with the 15-inch one. No matter how fast my pc is I want my eyes to be safe and do my things easier. 13 is too small, for me of course.

      hmm. Thats 1 for the 13 and 1 for the 15, not making any easier guys! Just kidding. I actually have both MacBooks in front of me and can't figure out which one to take back. So far my thoughts are the 13 inch is a lot easier to type on, the 15 inch the keyboard is farther away, I also feel like there is too much screen space on the 15, or wasted white space, and because its an inch taller Im looking up more which puts strain on my eyes. However, using the 13 inch the screen does seem crammed, especially after using the 15 inch. 15 inch is nice too but I'm thinking do I really need all that power, it does seem to be overkill, but who knows I might need it later in the future.

    Used to (actually still have) MBP 15". Now a happy MBA 13" user - ultra portable; lightweight and have been using cloud storage - Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, AWS so no problem with storage. More then adequate for a web developer P.S. I'm not a gamer though.

        My next machine will likely be a Macbook, after two iMacs in a row. Upgrading to the bigger screen, I was initially "Wow" - but now realize a large part of the iMac's screen isn't used optimally. Could have done just as well with a smaller screen. Not sure if that translates to a laptop screen, haven't yet walked into the store to compare models.

        Please let us know what you finally decide to pick up - and how you like it

        P.S. - Got the Macbook Pro retina. Loving it!

    My rule is....when it comes to stuff like electronics and cars...go with what will have better resale value down the road.

    You never know when something else will catch your eye.

    So if BRAND or loading up on features or size adds to the resale then go for it.

      Adding features to a computer may increase your absolute resale value but it also increases the initial cost. The relative % depreciation over time will be the same for either macbook in this case imo.

    I'm doing everything, and I mean every single thing, on a 13" Macbook PRO Retina with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 8Gb and 256Gb SSD and lovin' it!

    SSD has been the breakthrough for performance, not the processor. Processor speed doesn't count if you're waiting around for data from a hard drive.

    13" is such a transportable size, but the screen is big and clear enough that I feel I don't need the bigger one. A friend has the 15" and, to me, it is just plain clumsy in size.

    If you can afford the 500Gb SSD even better as it is surprising how fast the drive fills up! Again 16Gb RAM will help if you run a multitude of programs at once - I have to use the iCare App to optimize my RAM usage.

      Yeah it actually 2 inches and thats not the only difference between computers. 15 inch is quad core, 13 inch is dual core. 15 inch has 16gb ram the 13 inch has 8gb of ram.

        for 99% of all IM work you will not notice the extra RAM or cpu cores. These will only be noticed in intensive programs such as image or video editing or high end games. The only real thing of significance here is the size of the screen. The 15 inch will of course give you more screen real estate but ultimately for IM work which will mostly be in your web browser anyway the difference will just purely be personal preference.

        To help everyone out you could provide more details. I mean asking what is the best laptop for making money seems like a moot point. You give a great marketer a first generation iMac circa 1998 they will make more money than a newbie on a 15" MacBook. The computer is irrelevant to the actual task of making money.

        You could give us more detail about how you intend to use said laptop and we may be able to inform you better. Do you use photoshop or after effects? Do any programming? Like to run multiple applications simultaneously? All of these are more relevant than "the best to make money online"

          I use it for web browser, microsoft word, iWeb, yes I still use iWeb. I'm leaning toward the 13 because its easier to type on, but I'm worried later on if I want to start developing apps or something I may want to watch a video and code side by side. I just don't like the weight and the big footprint of the 15 inch and i feel like there is a lot of wasted space. I made money just fine on my white 13 inch macbook back in the day, but i had a 15 inch pc before that. I'm just kind of using both laptops for now trying to get a feel but I only have so long before the return period.

A way round your issue of wanting to watch videos and code at the same time would be to just connect an external monitor. This is what I do and it works fine. Of course this means that you have to be in one place when you are using it but that is never an issue for me for the things I need the extra screen space for.

            If I am travelling with my laptop the screen space is perfectly suitable.

                When I use the external monitor I use an external mouse and keyboard as well. So its just like have a desktop that I can then just pick up and take with me if I ever need to.

    What really matters to you?

    1) Speed and performance
    - do you really need a powerhouse to run IM? (average IMer use web browser and internet connection)
    - do you game?
    - do you use photoshop, after effects, final cut pro?
    - do you work with 3d rendering stuff?

    If most of your answer is:
    YES - then 15" is the right choice
    NO - then 13" is the right choice

    2) Portability
    - do you need to carry around your laptop that often? Or you just use most of the time on your desk
    - do you bother carrying quite heavy laptop?

    If your answer is:
    YES - then 13" is the right choice
    NO - then 15" is the right choice

    3) Do you bother with battery life?
    YES - then 15" is the right choice
    NO - then 13" is the right choice

    I have been using 15 inch macbook pro's since 2006 and have a 2010 version. I went to the Apple Store to look at a new one yesterday and initially thought I had to stick with the 15'...UNTIL I saw the resolution on the ones with retina display.

    Now I think I could definitely live with 13' as long as it has the retina display.

    I spent some time using now and it was so much easier on my eyes that they actually felt more relaxed. So if you can afford it go for anything with the retina display.

    I believe that the 13 inch Model is perfect. It is the perfect balance between screen size and portability. 11-inchers are too small, and 15 inchers are nice and big, but also not that much portable. 13 Inch Laptops are the sweet-spot in between, and so I think you should go with the 13 Inch one.

    One more vote for the 15 inch one! I use my Macbook in the office with a second 27 inch screen and when I'm traveling or when I'm somewhere else it's nice to see something on the screen. I would go with the 15 inch one because it's just a bit bigger and of course the performance is better! I would suggest to go in the store and compare them yourself.

    I don't have a mac but a 15 inch screen just seems perfect to work with. I used a 17 inch laptop before and it was just to big and bulky and also used a 12 inch laptop and still didn't find comfort in using it, this why I feel that 15 inch feels just right.

      Didn't know that you need a NASA grade computer to do this... All you need is good internet connection and maybe decent size hard-drive.

    Go with the 15 inch. The bigger the screen the quicker your eyes will allow your brain to process the information. I myself have a 21 or 23 inch AIO Samsung. Works great for multitasking.

      I think I'm leaning toward the 13 inch now. When I get a desk I will just get an external monitor. The 15 inch is just idk kind of clunky and doesn't feel as personal. But then going back to the 13 inch everything feels a little cramped. Seems like a compromise either way I just got to decide which one I'm more willing to live with. Still have both machines.

    Looks like your leaning towards the 13" but Its got to be the 15", for me screen size is much more important than the slight gain in portability you get with the 13" Also RAM. The more the merrier. The more programmes and multi tasking you can do the better. Because these new macs are basically glued together now and hard to upgrade make sure you get the best you can for your budget to start with.

      That's a good point. Might need the extra power eventually, more ram is always good.

    I'm an in home computer tutor and virus removal specialist here in Honolulu Hawaii. Unless your editing sound or movies for your website get a pc. They're lower cost to both buy and repair and yes, Macs/Apples get viruses now so for long term savings go with a PC.

    Its better overall and worth the money. I would never ever go back to Windows.

    Plus if you need to take breaks, then just watch something on your bigger screen besides watching your profit chart

    13" is good enough for the work you will be doing but I suggest you head down to an apple store to try it out and see which screen is more suitable for you. Some people find that reading text on a 13" screen is hard or uncomfortable for their eyes.

    Definitely the bigger one - the 13" might be slightly more portable, but bigger is better especially when you're staring at the screen all day and also don't forget you are going to be typing a whole lot. 13" keyboards are more cramped and place your wrists at more of an angle - that sort of sucks long term.

      Isn't the keyboard the exact same on both computers? I find typing on the 13 inch to more comfortable actually, because the keyboard is closer. On the 15 inch the keyboard is farther away and having to reach makes it uncomfortable.

    Personally I think you need a 15". It just helps to have that extra size. I have a 15" Macbook Pro that I run Parallels on so I can switch between my Mac side for most of my normal usage. But then I also have some marketing software programs that requires Windows to run. So I'll then turn on my Virtual Machine and run Windows 8 and use the software when I need it.

    Either will do just fine for your IM business. You wont notice the power gap for the type of software you use.

    The only question that matters is this: is portability a big factor for you? Does your laptop leave your desk often? Take your decision accordingly.

    If you're a graphics or web designer, you might need something like the MacBook but for anyone who is just surfing online or maintaining a website, any regular computer or laptop will do.

    Why does one even ask? Based on what you said, the 15" is the CLEAR winner in EVERY respect!

    So WHY is the 13" there?

    Lighter
    Cheaper
    Smaller
    Maybe older technology

    So the 15" is great for EVERYTHING. The 13" is basically best simply for travel if you are willing to sacrifice.

    I just have the standard 13 inch macbook pro and it is perfect. It runs like a dream and have a few heavy duty programs running on it.

      I would just like everyone to know that I settled on the 13 inch Macbook Pro. I decided when I get my own place I will get an iMac and this will be my travel computer. Sold the 15 inch yesterday. Thanks for all the advice!

        I purchased a new iMac 5K for myself for Christmas and am totally blown-away by the value. I am sure that you will be very happy when you add the iMac to your stable. It's a dream.

    I have one 27" because I want to see things clearly and crispy images as I have some work related to that and another one I have 15" macbook pro which I intentionally chose it for backup purpose because 13" is too small and it's really important to care your eyes.
