So I'm building my own electric car...

Most of you guys who I've met at the Warrior or JVZoo events know I'm something of an auto geek and may have heard a little about this project I started in 2011, but some major progress was made last week so I figured I'd share an update:

... and for those who don't, the short version is this: This car started as a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle. Now it's a high-tech death trap powered by 38 Lithium-Phosphate batteries and will do 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds, 120 mile range.

Also, the central computer is a Raspberry Pi. No doors on the vehicle, the canopy lifts via a hydraulic motor which I can control from the Pi via a web browser. In a couple months I'll actually be able to control it from my Samsung SmartWatch

I caught a show a couple years back where this guy in Ca. would covert basically classic cars into electric cars for celebrities. The episode I saw he did a 68 Camaro.
      Then there's this cycle.
It's really amazing what can be done with electric vehicles.
Makes you wonder why car manufacturers can't come up with stuff as good.

Massive capital expenditure on re-tooling factories I'd imagine.

Electric motors produce their peak HP immediately, which is why they're so efficient. In a gas motor, the "power curve" is whatever RPM's that particular motor is producing the maximum amount of power. For an electric motor, it's always at peak power. This has a trade-off though - even though the 0-60 will rival the most expensive exotics in the world, my top speed will only be about 90 mph. Which is fine, because frankly it would be scary as shit to drive this thing at 90... it IS based on a Beetle chassis afterall.

As for why can't the major car companies do it... Range, safety standards, and costs. I'll get about 120 miles out of this, but the whole car only weighs about 1,600 lbs with me in it. If I had to meet US regulations for crash prevention it would be more than twice the weight. I don't have the formula handy to calculate exactly what it would be, but every pound requires a certain amount of energy. If the motor is using more energy to move the vehicle, it's draining the batteries faster. Tesla overcame this with a huge battery pack, but it's around $40K or so. That puts the price of the whole car out of reach for most ordinary buyers. My setup was only about $11K in comparison.

Ooh, that sounds almost like a high-powered bike?

I see there are no doors, and that the top slides up on struts, but how do you get in and out??

Well, I don't want to start sounding like Jeremy Clarkson, but this is the problem with electric cars, isn't it?

Interesting, though! Wishing you well with it, and looking forward to updates.

It's hydraulic. Originally I wired in an aftermarket keyless entry system to raise and lower the top (holding down the lock or unlock button on the keychain to raise/lower). I literally just finished the Raspberry Pi interface last week so once I get it installed in the car I'll be able to do it from my phone, followed by the watch. Yeah, I'm that nerd.

For some reason, I keep hearing the Knight Rider Theme song in my head and am picturing you with a David Hasselhoff hairdo.

      Yep

I don't have the drivetrain in the car yet since the car just left the body shop, but I wired it all up in my garage as a test and it's good to go. I have some scheduled travel in the next few weeks, but shortly after that I'll be able to get all of this stuff installed in the vehicle. Maiden EV voyage coming soon.

        2 things Ron.

Let us see this in action when it get's fully on the road and for people across the pond, a video of you getting into the vehicle in case someone comes round to take me for a drive in a similar vehicle I won't know what to do.

I think it's excellent, well done.

That video might already be on Facebook, I drove it for a while with the Volkswagen motor still in it before pulling it all out to go electric.

Unbelievable. So a mod decided to remove my link to the project because it's to a "personal site". Freelancer has surely done a great job of running this place into the ground... what a waste of time.

I've also noticed that my beloved lounge has gone from free willy nilly to nothing allowed.

They certainly have done a militant job with the spammers, I do have to give them that, but while doing so, they've started ruling with an iron fist and have ended up throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It sort of makes this place a drag as of late.

Probably just had some efficiency expert go through this side of Freelancer business umbrella, (managers love to see the profits go up).

Fortunately it also tends to take the fun out of things as well, but it should calm down soon enough!

I'm hoping its like the pendulum swing, too far to the left, too far to the right, and then a happy medium. I only hope that I can stand it long enough to find out.

Don't worry they will find a happy medium, the WF site will glow with positive vibes, the heavens will open, and the sun will come up, and those pesky birds will sing....

Then WC will be unleashed from the WF vault and the Pendulum will fall off the table, again (well time will tell)?
