How long do you use sliced cold cuts?

When you get fresh cold cuts from the grocery store, how long will you use them for?

Some people say 3 days, but I know other people who will buy them on Sunday and use them for lunch all week.

I ask now because I bought some good Boar's Head no salt added turkey on December 3rd and I was wondering if it's still good to eat today, the 9th. FWIW, I never opened the package, so air never got to it since it was originally sliced, which should extend it's life IMO.

I usually use the smell test for food, but turkey has a bit of an odd smell even when completely fresh.

If you have to ask the question, I think that at some level you have already answered it for yourself.

If you think a case of the trots is worth the couple of bucks you have invested in some lunch meat - have at it.

Let us know how that turned out after you are done talking to raaaaaalph on the porcelain phone.

    Cheers. - Frank

Doesn't food in a package have a use by date stamped on it?

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

      It's not packaged meat.

It's fresh cold cuts, sliced and wrapped up on the 3rd.

I'm one of those "three day" people...unless it's a heavily processed meat like salami or pepperoni. The only reason I'd consider eating turkey at six days is if I need excuse to stay home from work.

That's why I mentioned that it is the "no salt added" type. I think the salt helps preserve it.

You've been using salami and pepperoni as an excuse to take the day off, for far too long.

He's not aware that salami and pepperoni are meant to be taken orally.

Honestly, I never even considered that point but I'm happy to know that you've got that all worked out.

P.S. That said, I'm watching a show on the CIA Torture Report and I have one question. What the hell is 'rectal rehydration?" I swear. - it's one of the things they did.

In this case, I think the "re" is redundant. Think of it as rectal hydration. I think you'll figure it out from there.

Oh, my! How is that torture? On the Upper West Side of Manhattan people pay $100 to have that done to them. :-)

No - that's what I charge. You go ahead and eat that 6 day old turkey and you'll happily pay it. lol

                            Hi everyone.

I found some eggs left by the side of the road last week and have been spending a great deal of time wondering if I should eat them. So much so that I've taken the day off to get to the bottom of it.

I don't think they're as prompt about letting the water out as they are letting it in.

Open package. Smell it. If it stinks or is even off a bit, don't eat it. Otherwise, I would and have eaten lunch meat all week long. I don't, however, buy lunch meat that says "salt free."

If it smells okay, run a finger over it. If it's getting slimy (not greasy - a lot of meat is a tad greasy, but slimy), that's bacteria so don't eat it. If you are going to eat older meat, just slap a slice of cheese on it and top it with a layer of iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce can kill botulism (however if it's strongly botched, you need a head of lettuce, not a leaf). Cheese has calcium, which is hard to digest and will trigger the production of more stomach acid, which in turn, kills bacteria.
