Can MICROWAVE ovened food give you cancer?

My mother would not use a microwave oven to heat her
food. She thinks that it's unnatural and would somehow
corrupt the food. She trust heat only from another source.

Many people have this same idea but is there really any science
behind it? Hardly, ...

Microwaves CAN hurt you, but they stop the moment the power is cut! Ironically, there are VERY dangerous radioactive items in homes today. One is MANDATED BY LAW in the US! Want to guess what they are?

    1. In the early 20th century(maybe earlier), they found a neat trick. It was used FREELY until like the late 1970s. It is HIGHLY TOXIC! Some have gotten radiation burns, and the people that applied it got various cancers because the tipped the brush with their TOUNGE!!!!!!! The item? The RADIUM glow in the dark dial!

    2. In some countries, apparently including the US, they use CESSIUM to radiate some food so it is virtually spoil proof! THAT should give you a clue as to the TOXICITY! I am unsure if they provide this domestically.

    3. I don't know WHY, but one object MANDATED BY LAW in the US, at least in many spots, etc... apparently often has one of the most deadly elements known to man. Ironically, the element is called Amerecium! Supposedly one SPECK could quickly kill you. It is lucky that they encase such a tiny amount. Anyway, chance are that you are within about 30 feet of one RIGHT NOW! ENJOY!

Never heard about smoke detectors before. The alpha radiation would be
harmless but gamma radiation is another story.

Gee, will irradiating your food hurt ya? Serious? Radiation changes the molecules in your food. Not sure if the radiation hangs on and for how long, but I've never heard of radiation that doesn't hang on at least awhile. Then top that off - a lot of people heat their food in plastic of all toxic nightmares.

You won't catch me using one either. I don't take kindly to irradiated much of anything. You can tell your mom that she's not alone.

It uses electromagnetic radiation, so it is a different type of radiation. there IS a fractional kind of reverse reaction. That is how MRIs work. But it isn't the nuclear radiation that can hang on for years or centuries.

You are right about the plastic though. THAT is probably the worst part of microwaving. ALSO, while a microwave is running, it CAN hurt tissue around it to some degree. A faraday cage WILL hold most of it at bay though. That is ANOTHER thing! faraday cages work well with MAGNETIC radiation, but don't work at all with NUCLEAR radiation.

Microwave ovens, radiation and the cancer scare

One tactic used by microwave scaremongers is to instill fears about radiation and cancer. When people hear the word radiation, they tend to freak out. I suspect that even people who understand that we’re not talking about a nuclear accident, gamma rays or x rays still have an uncomfortable feeling about “radiation” cooking their food (after all, we call it “nuking” right?)

But when we talk about microwave “radiation” we are simply talking about production of thermal energy, aka, heat. Radiation and radioactive are NOT the same thing. Celeste Robb-Nicholson, M.D. from the Harvard Health Review explains:

“Microwaves do not cause cancer. They’re a form of non-ionizing radiation and thus cannot ionize tissue. Microwave ovens use low-frequency waves of electrical and magnetic energy to produce heat to cook food. They don’t make food radioactive, nor do they trigger cancer-causing genetic mutations.”

A search of the medical literature brings up absolutely nothing linking microwave cooking to cancer.

The research says that concern over cancer causing compounds such as heterocyclic amines (HCAs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), would be better directed toward educating consumers on the charring and blackening that occurs when grilling or barbecuing muscle meats, rather than cooking the meat in microwave ovens.

In fact, cooking in a microwave can actually REDUCE the formation of HCAs. This quote comes from the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov):

“Studies have shown that microwaving meat prior to cooking helps to decrease mutagens by removing the precursors. Meats that were microwaved for 2 minutes prior to cooking had a 90-percent decrease in HCA content.”
And the ridiculous "study" that went viral and started all the stupidity

A large part of all the microwave alarmism today can be traced back to a single story that was spread on the internet until it went viral and was eventually accepted as factual. It’s the story of the infamous “Swiss research” done by “food researcher” Hans Hertel, who allegedly performed his own private study to see how microwaved foods affected the results of blood tests. A typical iteration of the story goes like this:

“The use of microwave ovens in cooking can alter the structure of nutriments in foods, making it difficult for the organism to make use of them. Hertel discovered that food cooked or thawed in a microwave oven could cause changes in the blood, indicating that a process of illness is developing. SIMILAR CHANGES ARE ALSO FOUND IN THE CASE OF CANCER.”

As with most alarmist nutrition nonsense on the net, this one also involves the ubiquitous conspiracy theory. The story continues:

“The best studies about the use of microwaves to heat food were purposely kept from consumers. Hertel was efficiently “gagged” by Swiss microwave oven producers. For over 10 years, Hertel has fought for the right to tell the world what he’d discovered.”

Actually the best studies are NOT kept from consumers, they are peer reviewed, replicated and published in scientific journals where we can actually look them up. Alas, we cannot access Hertel’s “research” to judge its validity because it was never published.

In fact, by Hertel and his follower’s own accounts, this “study” was just himself, Bernard Blanc (who later recanted) and six of their buddies who locked themselves in a hotel room and conducted a personal and arguably non-scientific and non-controlled experiment. This is not real research; it was never verified or replicated by other researchers. Yet you see Hertel quoted in almost every “microwaves equal death” article on the Internet, a good tipoff that everything else in the article is suspect as well.

You call it stupidity to not eat food that has had every nutrient in it destroyed or altered? Regardless of the radiant form - the nutrients are destroyed by them. And what do altered nutrients do? Serious - if you alter a nutrient and the body doesn't recognize it as such, what's the use of eating the stuff?

Remember - we were told cell phones were safe for a long, long time, too.

I'm a cook and a good one when I want to cook. I'm an old fashioned cook, cooking most things from scratch. I use a stove and oven, but have had a microwave since they came out. I heat up my coffee in it and occasionally, if my plate gets cold before I eat it, I'll reheat it. That's about all I've ever used a microwave for, but I wouldn't want to do without one.

There are a lot of things that destroy nutrients, including peeling skins, letting food sit exposed to air, and overcooking on the stove. The moment you cut some fruits and vegetables, they begin to lose nutrients.

Cell phones put out the SAME radiation Microwave Ovens do. The only real difference is that it isn't as focused, and it is FAR weaker. And YEAH, phones are bad, but if you remove the battery, there is NO radiation left. I say that that way because a phone that is on in any way is often always putting out radiation. But it IS EMR radiation.

The funniest thing about this is consumers DID find radiation, ****MAGNETIC**** radiation. They also found an easy way to detect it, and it spread about as fast as it would have if the internet were available. This WAS like 40 years ago! People INSISTED that it pass the test before they buy the microwave.

So WHAT HAPPENED? A NEW LAW, ALL are shielded and caged, and all of the sudden the commotion stopped. I don't know if this radiation would have triggered a Geiger counter, I think both methods DO have the same basic principle, but TRULY irradiated food will change a Geiger reading appreciably. Microwaved food won't. It will basically be invisible. And the average microwave probably has less lead in it than the average computer.

I hardly ever use microwaves and am surprised how quick many people are to believe they are completely safe. Recent evidence, that is even supported by the FDA, suggests that microwaving popcorn produces substances that can be carcinogenic. And that's just one example of something that has been identified.

Like so many other modern technologies, the fact is we really don't know all of the consequences of using microwaves. To me, it's obviously an unnatural process that destroys nutrients, not to mention flavor. It also heats things up unevenly, so that the outer part of the food tends to be too hot compared to the center.

Just because some mainstream authority proclaims that something is safe doesn't mean that it really is. In many cases, the effects are not known. There is also extreme pressure to declare modern conveniences as safe simply because people are so attached to them. We are all too willing to give the benefit of the doubt to devices that speed things up.

As I am sure you are aware, you can apply that same statement to the reverse...

Like so many subjects such as this one, we can spend hours on the internet and find articles, studies, etc. to support your (our) viewpoint.

For me it comes down to personal preference. Like Suzanne, I have used microwaves for many (over 30) years in much the same way - heating things that cool off, etc. I love to cook, but I don't "cook" in them because I don't like how the food comes out - so that's a personal preference. But reheating - yep. Convenient. Although never in plastic. I haven't done that in years.

Seems anything and everything can cause some illness - but so can stressing about all the stuff that's no good for you. Remember - stress kills

There are some INGREDIENTS in prepackaged popcorn that are HIGHLY unstable, and BECOME carcinogenic, WHEN HEATED!!!!! ONE is some artificial butter flavoring.

BTW that is a COMMON problem! The maker of aspertame ADMITTED that aspertame has the SAME problem! ALSO, a popular meat treatment that is used on most bacon and perhaps most pork products, nitrates has the SAME problem. When heated to, I believe it is 400f, in an oxygen environment, like on earth, they become nitrites, which are carcinogenic.

That stuff isn't food and shouldn't be eaten even without microwaving it. YUK! I can't believe the crap people will put in their mouths. I never said it WAS real food. As for the fake butter, they did it to package it up and have it go through the pack as it does. Real butter won't keep as long. That is also why they hydrogenate oils. Actually hydrogenating oils makes them keep longer, stay as a kind of gel or cream, rather than a liquid, and stay mixed. The nitrates are to make the meat seem fresher longer.

I say this only to answer your question, not to commend the food.

My question was rhetorical. I can't believe people eat that kind of crap then whine and cry when they turn up sick. Duh - droooool, ya know?

Local grown certified organic popcorn popped in a quarter pound of REAL butter ( I like it well soaked) and popped on an old fashioned real stove with a half cup of parmesan cheese tossed in when finished - makes about a gallon of popcorn that is non-life-threatening goodness. In fact, it's my late night meal every Sunday...since I was old enough to remember.

Real food rots. I learned to live with that and buy accordingly a long, long time ago.

I couldn't live without my microwave for making my morning coffee piping-hot. I've yet to find a coffee maker that gets it anywhere near hot enough.

Nothing should be actually 'cooked' in a microwave. I won't even use one for thawing things out. That's what the top shelf of the refrigerator is for. I know folks that warm up pizza in them. Putting any bread product in a microwave should be against a federal law. Yuck!

I will confess to warming up some soup or a bowl of chili in one and have even been known to use plastic wrap to cover the chili to keep those exploding kidney beans from making a mess. The way you know it's hot enough is by making sure the wrap starts to melt and a nice sized hole appears at the end of the cycle. You only live once, so you might as well live dangerously. If using plastic wrap in my microwave is the worst thing I do for my health I should live to be 100 - or more.

              Cheers. - Frank

Hmmm, hadn't thought about wearing it on the side under the arm - that at least isn't completely bizarre. But in most of those images, it just looks very uncomfortable. While running, if I take my cell phone, it's in a pocket in another piece of clothing; definitely not my bra!

Then again, I'm not a millenial who believes cell phones are an appendage, that, if not attached to my body at all times means certain death...

Of course, there are high altitude baking procedures, which are different from baking at lower altitude.

I have about one shot of alcohol a decade. But in my late teens/early 20s I drank about a quart (It was before they switched to metric) of scotch a day.

Also, you only need to be 18 to get medical MJ. 21 for rec. I rarely smoke any more and never liked edibles. It takes too long and you can't control how high you get. Virtually all the problems are with edibles.

The strains are basically the same, unless it's for young kids with severe seizures and there's strains for them that have little to no THC.

Making it legal didn't change whether people smoke or not. It only made it legal. Every problem with MJ existed when it was illegal. I think it will be like Prohibition and we'll see a sharp rise in usage immediately after MJ became legal, then over decades and generations the usage will drop, just like with alcohol and cigarettes.

We need to remember that after Prohibition the usage of all the legal drugs dropped (alcohol and tobacco) while the usage of the illegal drugs increased (heroine, coke, MJ, etc). History shows us that legal/illegal affects usage in the OPPOSITE way many think. But it does take time.

Tax money for legal vices is used to help fight addiction. Profits for illegal drugs go to gangsters, terrorists and cartels. And vices and addictions should be dealt with by the medical community not the law enforcement community.

Your last paragraph pretty much sums up why I voted for it to become legal. Also, I hope murders and violence from the illegal trade go away, and over useage also goes away.

And, it makes no sense to me for recreational users to have their lives, and their kids lives, messed

Yes Flatlander, as Don pointed out there are often special baking instructions for those of us that live at higher altitude. This is because at higher elevations different conditions exist, such as lower air pressure.

For example, the boiling temperature of water is considered to be 212 F. However, because there's less pressure at about 8400 ft where I live, water boils at closer to about 190 F. Think of it as the opposite of pressure cooking which would be "vacuum cooking", which is a concept you may be able to appreciate.

BTW, every drunk, lush, wino and alchie should move to high altitude. Since blood alcohol content is based on the ratio of oxygen to alcohol in the blood stream and at high altitude people have less oxygen in their blood systems, you can get much drunker with fewer drinks up here.

To tell you the truth, you really haven't been drunk until you drink at altitude. Talk about a buzz...

Very true on it taking a lot less to get a buzz from alcohol. We almost called the cops on a 21 year old
guest who had two long island ice teas and some pot. Lucky for him, his uncle got him under control.

I'm happy to see that too and I wondered the same thing about the bra, but there they had statistics of how many women who wore their cellphone in their bra got tumors. Go figure. They probably have a sweaty phone and lumps in their clothing that shouldn't be there. lol.

I had relatives who lived well into their 90s as well. The thing is, they didn't have to know about health foods or organics because food was much more natural when they were growing up. Contrast that with the last couple of decades when even many children are obese and suffering from diseases such as diabetes. While some of that is due to a sedentary lifestyle, it also has to do with the modern junk food diet.

Can microwaved food cause cancer. Of course.

For example, if you microwave something high in fat, it's still in there, when you take it out of the microwave. So...this microwaved food can still cause cancer.

If you microwave bacon, say 5 pounds of it...every day....you'll eventually be killed by it...Murder by Microwave.

Microwave ovens heat food by causing friction between the molecules. So...heat.

Does a camp fire cause cancer? A barbecue? Baking?

Man, a very quick google search would explain how these things work.

Next week, "Does freezing Popsicles cause cancer?"

Oh, and you can't get pregnant by shaking hands.

Who's stressing, Mike? I have always, like Suzanne, been an excellent cook. I won't use a microwave - for anything. However, that doesn't stress me any.

My roomie does have a microwave. I use it once in awhile to microwave my sink sponges to kill bacteria in them. Other than that, I've never considered them safe, so never used one....and don't see cooking the way I've done it all my life as being stressful, other than if I'm trying to time a large meal - and that's always been dicey, and I'm sure it is for people that add a microwave to their kitchens, too.

Lots of people stress this kind of thing Sal. If you don't - awesome

I know I don't stress it. I try to eat well, but that doesn't stop me from occasionally hitting a McDonalds, using a microwave, eating prepared processed food, deli cold cuts and so on.

      Life is too short.

While I might sound it, I'm not a food nazi either. I eat 95% organic, but..........
there's a few days a month I binge like a landfill. During those few days, I'll eat a whole apple pie ala mode with vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls. I try for the best quality ice cream, but it's still junk even if organic. The pie is usually homemade. Then there's the sugar cookies - homemade, organic and high octane sugar buzz. And cheesecake. I don't know anyone else that can polish one of those off in one sitting - I"m not talking Sara Lee - I'm talking good solid german cheesecake with the crust that is made of the browned cake itself.

Frankly - if I didn't have my metabolism torked, I'd probably weigh enough to not fit through the average door. My body burns every calorie I put in it, though so when I decide to go off the rails and just pig for a day or two - no harm done.

Is that a joke or serious? I know when I lived out there I had to drink huge amounts of water. If you were serious - tell us the reasoning. I was at 8,700. Kurt would also want to know that one I'm guessing.

I already know the answer. Dan is correct. However, it only applies to people that were also born at altitudes above 5,000 ft and doesn't apply to flatlanders that moved to high altitude later in life.

That's what I suspected - but there were no smilies and some facts are just way strange from the get.

I've got a microwave oven (buried somewhere in the attic).
I've never liked using them as I think food or beverages prepared in them just taste a little funny to me. It's probably all in my mind, but even so the simple solution for me is not to use one.
If I want convenience I use my crock pot.
But then I also won't use a propane grill, in fact I have only used one once in my life. I have a round Webber I use charcoal in for grilling and what I call a pig cooker for BBQ that I only use wood in.

I've noticed that some foods taste different when microwaved. I'm assuming it has something to do with the fact that the Microwave heats the water content, and not everything equally. But I don't know.
