Have a virus and usually Webroot can knock it out but this time it has not been able to take it out, any advice on how to remove it? It is a Windows 8 Laptop.

Do you have any clue which virus it is? Did Webroot identify it? I'd install Malwarebytes and AVG Free to see if they have better luck. The only time my computer got infected by a virus was when I purchased Webroot.

    • The name appeared CTB-Locker I'm trying everything the virus won't die.

  • Check out avast antivirus free @ avast.com. It's pretty powerful and might be able to help you out. It's worth giving it a shot it's the one I use on a daily basis and I've never had any virus issues with it installed. Hope this helps you out!

That's ransomwear. That's not good if you have that, but you haven't described what that malware does

    • I'm an IT guy and I've tried many tools. The one that work best for me in cases like the one you describe are:

Adware Cleaner (perfect for removing malware)
Combofix (perfect for removing viruses and some rootkits)
TDSSKiller (perfect for removing an array of rootkits)

If you choose to use these utilities I recommend you run them in 'Safe Mode'.

If you visit obscure websites every now and then (or you're not sure you aren't) then you one way to do some preventive damage control is to use your browser in a virtualized OS.

This might sound a bit geeky but it is not that hard. Windows Pro versions already have a build in 'Virtual Machine' that you can use. Even better is it to use the free Oracle VirtualBox which allows you to run any OS in a Window under your main Operating System.

      Good luck!
  • Hi all. I was also infected by ransomware. I had the .ccc file extension added to my files. First I thought it was Cryptowall. Then I did some research and discovered that it is probably this CTB-Locker. Other people have this .ccc extension as well: Restore Files Encrypted via RSA Encryption. Remove CryptoWall and Other Ransomware Manually | SensorsTechForum.com These guys say in the comments there's a decryptor for CTB-Locker ransomware.

Threat Spotlight: TeslaCrypt – Decrypt It Yourself. I haven't tried it yet, waiting for a friend to try and fix it for me... Let me know if you try it and if it works.
