Okay, for you 3 or 4 people who might be interested in this topic...

Let's talk songwriting.

I'm talking about your own, not "Joe Cool Songwriter" who has been making
a fortune at it for years. We know there are tons of great successful
songwriters out there.

I'm talking about you.

When you write...

1. Do you try to emulate somebody else? If so, who?
2. Do you start with the melody first or the lyrics first?
3. Do you have a favorite instrument you like to write on?
4. Do you have formal training or do you just wing it?
5. Do you write alone or with others?
5. Do you think you're any good?

I'll start.

I've listened to so many styles of music in 51 years that I don't think it's
even possible for me to try to emulate one person. I'm so full of influences
that I've written everything from heavy metal to classical.

I usually start with a melody or even just a chord progression, but
sometimes I do write the lyrics first.

I used to write all my songs on keyboard but lately, I'm writing more
guitar based songs and it makes a big difference in the sound.

I do have some formal music training and it does help, but my best songs
are the ones where I just go with my gut.

I have tried to write with others but it usually comes out terrible, so now
I only write on my own. That way I have control of the whole process.

Am I any good? I don't know. I used to think I was, but as I get older I'm
starting to think that I just do this because it's fun. I certainly don't
consider myself good enough to ever make a living at it.

Okay, your turn.

Maybe we might actually get 2 or 3 posts to this thread.
