Hi,

Just curious...what has been your favorite job
other than IM?

I'm asking this after the thread about working from
home can get lonely at times...

so what has been your favorite job OUTISDE of IM?
any part time jobs that you enjoyed?

Mine has been when I was living in San Diego in college...
I was a pedicab driver...one of those bike taxis...

it was by far the most fun job out there...i did it for
money back in the days when i was a college student...
you get to socialize with people...and plus workout...
ride the bike all day...and ride around the city and
really get to feel, see, and get to know the city...also san
diego is beautiful so u get to enjoy the scenary, the beach, etc...
also a great workout cuz we rode the bike literally 30+ miles a day...
which is great for you physically...

just thinking about it...makes me want to move back to sd
sometimes...

so..what has been yours?

BJ

I don't mind bussing tables at restaurants.... You have to really bust your butt, and it gets stressful when people are yelling and whatnot....but you meet a lot of people too and then food discounts....chyaa.

I'm doing my fave job now, I have never given it up. In fact it got quite busy after Feb this year, so I made the decision to semi retire from IM so I could give it the attention it needs

I'm a nurse and back care specialist

I've learned great things from all of my jobs.

When I was 14 I worked in a vet hospital and restrained animals, took their vitals and cleaned out cages.

There was a girl named Candice who wouldn't speak to me in High School. Her cat was brought in and I helped calm her down, took vitals on the cat and was as nice as I could be - offered tissues, reassurance, etc.

The next day she came up to me and gave me a big hug and said thank you for being so kind.

She's one of many people that said nice things to me for helping them - it really made my day each time.

I also was able to learn cool stuff and help many injured animals. It was an emergency clinic, not just a vet clinic - so there were plenty of hit by car, sit, in pain animals and needed help. The job made me feel important to the people I helped so I enjoyed it greatly.

I like my current job (freelance SEO consulting) for the same reason. When people make sales because of work I did they get all excited and I'm the hero. It's great!

When Citigroup moved sites into Canary Wharf in London they had three huge datacentres built to house all their computer servers.

I had the main job of getting everything transferred and kitted out and I was busy ALL the time.

So basically I built up three gigantic datacentres for one of the largest investment banks in the world.

    That was a good job.

I also worked as a fitness instructor, a job I thought I would enjoy... it didn't... it bored me silly.

      Hey, Rezbi...

I've done a couple of datacentre moves, myself

THAT'S why I can't figure out why the big boys can't organise a product launch without their servers "crashing" (loose term)...I mean...I don't know about you, but that would've been the "end of my employment, thank you"...if the same had happened to me...

I was an IT manager at a non profit company that help inventors get their creations out into the world. That was pretty cool. Every day you'd be talking to someone who had a brand new innovation, and whilst some were pretty ordinary, some were fantastic!

One guy created this car that looked like a sports car straight out of the Jetsons, that ran completely on garbage as its power source. Check it out:

    That was a cool job

I was a working club musician for over a decade - exclusive to a 5 star hotel chain. It's how I ended up moving to Asia and finding my lovely Singaporean wife. Traveled everywhere thanks to that job, from Dubai to Russia and everywhere in between.

At a certain point - after 15 months of straight 6 nights per week of working - I had to say enough. Room service was expanding my abdomen, booze was killing my liver, female temptation was making my wife a tad homicidal as well lol! It all became a bit much.

So while I can say that was a great job, nothing is as satisfying as simply sitting in front of a computer and pulling money from it. Not even performing. Knowing I can be anywhere on this planet and with just an internet connection and a laptop I will be able to make a decent living... that is SO much cooler than shlocking cover tunes at rich drunk people. (I do miss room service now and then though )

Nursing Assistant in a psychiatric hospital. It was one of the first jobs I had, but even now I still think of the fun we all often had (probably a 'laughter in adversity' kind of thing!). I can remember realising what a thin line there is between sanity and insanity, but looking back, there was probably just a thin line between the staff and the patients

My second favourite job was working as a classroom assistant in a Special Needs school. It had it's tough parts - many of the kids had severe medical conditions and sadly it was not uncommon to come into work and be told that one of them had been taken into hospital and passed away - but it had it's compensations too. I'll never forget watching a ten year-old boy taking his first tottering steps unaided after we'd spent months trying to get him to walk. His parents had been told when he was a baby that it was unlikely this would ever happen. Little miracles like that used to go on in that place all the time.

Well, I'm only 19, so I can't possibly have had that many jobs yet =P

But I have been working with all kinds of sales, and I've loved it. I have also done some painting, and that's great if the weather is good. And believe it or not, I got whisteled on by a random group of girls. How often does THAT happen guys? Must've been because I got a sweet tan, had a sixpack and wore hot painters clothes :p

But I prefer sales, with a bit of painting every now and then. Now I'm getting more and more into offline IM, and that's sales COMBINED with IM. Will most likely be the best job ever And I get to say I have my own business when I meet new people (Still only 19, and all my friends are studying and have boring jobs)

When I was in college, I worked for the Development Office (fundraising). The people were amazing, and the work was great.

I was a teacher after I graduated -- and I loved working with the kids, but the other stuff that goes along with it was a horror, lol

Same sentiment goes for everyone of my friends that teach. It just sucks that the bureacracy gets in the way of what could be a great job.

As for me, I've been pretty fortunate that I've liked most of the jobs I've had. We owned a video store when I was teenager, and that was probably my favorite job. Hang out, watch movies, shoot the breeze. Just a good time. Learned a lot about customer service and good business, too.

I was a Forest Ranger for 12 years. Fresh from college, I supervised over 100 men trimming trees for utility lines. Talk about culture shock! Some of them could scarcely sign their own names - but they surely did know their work.

They were skilled artists, those tree men. I could tell which crew trimmed a tree just by the way the cuts were made. I quickly realized these men knew wayy more than I did in ways that mattered, that never were written down in books.

So I set about learning from them. First lesson was... to ask the same question of several different crews. If I got the same answer, then I could believe it.

Once these self-taught men realized I seriously respected their knowledge, they were more than willing to teach me.

And poke fun at me... one crew found I didn't like being whistled at, so every time I pulled up on the job, every tree along the street was whistling at me!

Couldn't help but laugh. And ask me about the time the goat "helped" the tree trimmers. Or about the nest of garter snakes. Or how my boss taught me how to tie my first neck-tie. [Being Maryland's first woman Forest Ranger was a coincidence, but led to some quite unique experiences! ]

This is my goal in life There is something magical about being in a used book store. I seriously get tingles.

When I become wealthy online (a millionaire ), I'm going to let it all work for me and "retire" to run my own used book store

My favorite gigs outside of IM, or entrepreneurship for that matter, was as a sales manager and director of national sales. It was fun and very rewarding to help a salesperson who was struggling to reach their goals. It was also a blast coming up with new strategies to win key clients and then implementing those strategies.

I used to teach Spanish and had a class where half of the students were special needs. I didn't have ANY training whatsoever in that class and wasn't sure what they'd be doing in a Spanish class anyway but we had the BEST time together. I'll never forget a little boy who was mostly deaf and had trouble speaking at all picked up Spanish words in no time because they're almost always spoken the way they're spelled.

I loved those kids - they were so kind and truly showed you what a joy it was to teach.
