President Obama wants to use executive actions, which do not need congressional approval, to help cities develop high speed internet. At this point, the US is 24th in the world in internet speed.

    The article said...

    I say...

Now that's what I'd call "leading from behind".

    From the article...

For instance, Seoul has an average cost of $30 per month for the fastest internet, which would cost $300 a month in the U.S.

Wow, now that sounds greedy and excessive.

And I sincerely hope the net stays like it is - without the ISPS determining who gets what at what speed.

I don't know if you mean me to get the picture I got, or put the names to the pawns I did, but it is interesting. You ARE right! And by pawn, I mean PAWN, as it is often understood!

          pawn
          noun

          noun: pawn; plural noun: pawns

a chess piece of the smallest size and value. A pawn moves one square forward along its file if unobstructed (or two on the first move), or one square diagonally forward when making a capture. Each player begins with eight pawns on the second rank, and can promote a pawn to become any other piece (typically a queen) if it reaches the opponent's end of the board.

•a person used by others for their own purposes.

To bad you didn't use prawns instead of pawns. It would make Steve's analysis much more entertaining.

The ISPS will ALWAYS determine who gets what! If their routers only support 100MBPS, SORRY! That is ALL YOU GET!

What is next? He determines that an egg and chicken breakfast be served for FREE by ALL rest areas, convenience stores or restaurants, and OUTLAWS all PORK products? BTW some cultures LOVE pork! There IS a reason why it has sold for over a millenia even though islam, and the old testament have declared it bad. Science DID find ONE thing bad about it, that ironically may be why the OT declared it bad, but proper curing and/or cooking gets rid of THAT problem.

This is LUDICROUS! Do you guys have any idea what it would take to get 1GB connections everywhere? Here's a HINT! less than a decade ago, the basic infrastructure for a MAJOR ILEC only allowed for a maximum of about 6GB across part of the nation. THEY have to share their resources with CLECs! So they can NOT use all they have! SO, for the two ends there to communicate at 1GB, they would have to have had VERY few users.

Now GRANTED, they may have upgraded a lot by now, but every major upgrade costs a BUNDLE. They will have to upgrade all the systems, switches, routers, etc... And I bet almost NO sites go faster than 1Gbps, that FEW go at 1Gbps, and a fair chunk go at 10Mbps. Hopefully by now at least close to 50% run at about 100Mbps. That USED to be a GOOD internal network. Last I heard, a GOOD INTERNAL network was 1Gbps. HECK, MY internal network is only 100Mbps, and the most demanding actions STILL don't use all the bandwidth! What is the average user going to use the 1Gbps for? HR gaming? Piracy? Spamming?

ALSO, it could take YEARS to upgrade the country. If the US did this, it might not even START until he gets out of office.

OH YEAH, humans can't really process things that fast, so don't talk to me about human rights, digital divide, school, etc... 1Gbps is ********WAY******** beyond that!

We have stopped investing in our infrastructure for so long that the very notion of planning for the next generation seems alien and out of place.

Compared to, say, committing us to putting a man on the moon in a decade, this seems pretty mundane and doable.

C'mon people. Fast, accessible internet access gives our children better tools to stay competitive. And free community college does too. It does not seem like too much to ask from this generation.

      You forget the Prime Directive;

If Obama proposed it, it's bad. The brain produces reasons afterward.

And on the other side of the isle, if Obama proposed it, it's good. And the brain produces reasons afterward.

The actual benefits of the idea are secondary to the Prime Directive.

Speaking of "typos"...looks like I'll have to explain this joke to Claude...

The correct word is "aisle", not "isle". An aisle is defined as a passage between a row of seats. An isle is a small island.

The Tom Hanks and Wilson reference is from the movie "Cast Away", where Hanks was shipwrecked on a small island and talked to his volley ball friend "Wilson".

The Tom Hanks and Wilson reference is from the movie "Cast Away", where Hanks was shipwrecked on a small island and talked to his volley ball friend "Wilson".

Well, thank God you explained it to me.

Wilson reminded me of you. A perfectly round head, full of hot air, with a fixed blank expression...with lots of make up....and no muscles....who people want to kick in the face.

No comments here, just preserving the typo for posterity. Too much bran definitely produces something though, and my reasoning is solid.

And, since we know what excessive bran causes the body to do, it's no surprise yours stores it in your head.

It does not seem like too much to ask from this generation.
The notion of investing in infrastructure isn't alien to all of us - just some of us.

      And IMHO...

Lots of baby boomers like to call the up and coming generation lazy, entitled etc., but an argument can be made that the baby boomers have failed and are failing those that will follow them in a big way.

IMHO, its not and hasn't been all the baby boomers - just some of them.

And BTW, there are a lot of older, dangerously bitter people running around the country.

There WAS a LOT of "investing in infrastructure" for the internet in the 1990s. There likely still is. But nobody ever expected to rip up the streets so much, etc...

Name ********ONE******** reasonable thing that "children" can do with a 1Gbps connection, that they can't do JUST AS WELL with a 100Mbps, or even a 10Mbps connection.. JUST ONE! Putting a man on the moon is at least something that required maybe a few acres of resources. Having national 1Gbps everywhere requires every square inch between the nearest capable connection and the DP, for EACH WAN connection. I once saw the phone company do that for one of our customers. It was quite a production! HECK, my father was in an old house, and had to get a new line. It took WEEKS!!!!!!!!!! And HE lucked out! The nearest capable line was right on the street, RIGHT IN FRONT of his home!

So WHY did it take so long? The point of demarcation was FAR away, and there were problems, so it had to be moved to another spot on the home. The lines were not pulled to the home, and they had to be. This meant THE ENTIRE DRIVEWAY HAD TO BE RIPPED UP! LUCKILY, a compromise was arrived at, and they cut out a portion of the driveway that was the width of about two bricks. The line was routed across THAT section, and it was filled with bricks. It ended up looking nice, but those bricks are still there after 2 DECADES. But HEY, if they needed a 1Gbps connection, they would STILL have had to do all that because that home was built BEFORE even CAT3, and 1Gbps needs CAT5!

Well, If I got 1Gbps, I would have to upgrade my internal network, and likely go wired with my notebook, and I would have to get a VERY fast solid state disk drive, or make my own, and I would download whole disks in 10seconds to 1.5 minutes. I could MAYBE upgrade my server, and provide a backup or whatever. YEAH, I checked. The server I started leasing a year or so ago is 100Mbps! My current NAS, that I bought a few months ago, doesn't even handle 50Mbps!

I do have 1000Mbps uplink ports on my dedicated servers but on the (non-raid) SSD I am running I am getting sequential read and write speeds near between 370-510MB/sec (SATA III) . My old spindle drives are doing less than 200MB/sec. That said, with 95th percentile billing, I can run through my allocated bandwidth (10KGB per/month on each) relative quickly if I allow unlimited download speeds on large download packages (say five 1GB files) and I am getting a good number of sales.

Many buyers hit my box at around 100-140 Mbps and that's plenty fast enough when allowing unrestricted simultaneous downloads.

    Cheers

Perhaps one of the goals of this proposal is to bring higher speed internet to rural communities across the country much like FDR and the TVA first brought electricity to a large part of the south in the 1930s.

    President Obama

The Biggest Foes of Obama's High Speed Internet Plan | Motherboard

    From the above article...

"Last year, a report by the Center for Public Integrity found that US cable and telecom giants have spent millions of dollars over the last decade to “lobby state legislatures, influence state elections and buy research to try to stop the spread of public internet services that often offer faster speeds at cheaper rates.”
